Did anyone see the Gordon Lightfoot concert at Meadow Brook? The rain was annoying, but the thunder and lightning added to the performance. I had a great time!

I didn't either. I like his music, though.

No, but I do like him.

Ironically, a client of mine pulled some 1940s Northwestern Mutual Life insurance policies from her safe deposit box yesterday to be cashed in ... signed by Edmund Fitzgerald, then President of NW Mutual.

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed
In the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral
The church bell chimed, till it rang 29 times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call GITCHE GUMEE
Superior, they say, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

Gordon Lightfoot, 1976.

Research on the ownership of the Fitz at the time of her loss would reveal that she was owned by the NWestern Life Insurance Company but under charter to Columbia Transportation Co.
Not only did the Fitzgerald carry Edmund's name, but it should be noted that Edmund's father, W.E. Fitzgerald also had a vessel named after him.
There is a well know postcard circulated among boat buffs that shows the W.E. Fitzgerald going thru the Soo Locks caked with ice. I mean really coverd. I am fortunate to have one.
The W.E. Fitzgerald was built back in 1906 in Wyandotte and sailed for Gartland SS Company. The W.E. was sold for scrap in the early '70's.

Yes I was there- First time seeing Gordon and worth the wait.

My Fave Lightfoot song- and this is a tough call, but I have to go with Canadian Railway Trilogy.

"A ribbon of steel from ocean to ocean symbolizes the unity of Canada" Craigellachie, BC Nov. 7, 1885; site of where the last spike was driven.

Hearing "The Weck" for the first time live was too cool!

If you could read my mind...love...you would see...
.............................. ..................

just like a paperback novel...
.............................. ..............
when you get to the part where the heart ache starts, the hero would be me...

Still my fav. was The Wreck of the Edmound Fitzgerald as my father would talk about it everytime we went up to the UP. Am happy to take my daughter to Belle Isle to show her the anchor of The Fitz at Dossin's GL Museum and share the story with her now.

Old Dan's Records is my fav. Anybody see Gordon about a year ago at the Fox? Did a show the same night Eminem was playing Comerica. Downtown was packed that night. He did a really good job, though he didn't do Carefree Highway, which disapointed me a little. Best of the night was when we mentioned that he was a Leafs fan between songs and the entire theater booed him in jest. Fun night.

There is a painting of the Arthur Anderson searching for survivors of the Edmund Fitzgerald during the storm in a gift shop in Harbor Springs. It is truly haunting.

The Arthur Anderson was headed for Gary, IN and the Fitzgerald headed for Zug Island via the locks at Sault Sainte Marie (which closed due to the severity of the storm). As the storm further intensified the Fitzgerald suffered a loss of radar. The ship slowed to come within range of receiving Anderson's radar data and for a time Anderson guided Fitzgerald toward the relative safety of Whitefish Bay. The last communication from the boat came at approximately 19:10 (7:10 PM), when Anderson notified Fitzgerald of being hit by two freak waves that were heading Fitzgerald's way. A few minutes later, she suddenly sank – no distress signal was received ... another ship in the area, the SS William Clay Ford later joined in the search for survivors.

BTW, I forgot to add my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song. It is 'If You Could Read My Mind'.

If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I'm a ghost that you can't see

If I could read your mind love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind that drugstores sell
When you reach the part where the heartaches come
The hero would be me
But heroes often fail
And you won't read that book again
Because the ending's just too hard to take

{instrumental intro}

I'd walk away like a movie star
Who gets burned in a three way script
Enter number two
A movie queen to play the scene
Of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now love, let's be real
I never thought I could act this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feelin's gone
And I just can't get it back

If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
But stories always end
And if you read between the lines
You'll know that I'm just tryin' to understand
The feelings that you lack
I never thought I could feel this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone
And I just can't get it back

I saw him a few years ago in one of his favorite old haunts...Ann Arbor. He was great and he did some stuff he rarely plays. I told my wife I was hoping he would play a certain song and it was like I had magically requested it... he did.
He also went out with some of the Fitzgerald crew family members when they dropped a bell with the crew's names down next to the ship near White Fish Point many years ago.
That seemed pretty classy.
