So I was on my way to Buzz Bar last night and decided to cut through Greektown as I hadn't been through there in a while. It was a weeknight at 10:15pm, and there were multiple Street Performers out. An Accordian player, a Guitar player and a Sax Player within a few blocks of each other. A couple of street perfomers during the Weekend has not been uncommon in the past, but on a Weeknight with no teams in town? |

I have also noticed an increase in the presence of greek town street performers on week nights. it makes everything seem more lively. I think it is partly because we're in the height of the summer months. Love that crazy saxaphone player - it sounds so cool echoing off the buildings. |

What's more amazing is that you were at a bar... on a weeknight! Who would have thought?! |

I hear these guys right outside of my window. I've been at my place seven years and they have been there during the week (summer) for years. later - naturalsister P.S. The talented trumpet player (older guy with an eye condition) has shown me pics of himself from the sixties in studio sessions with Miles Davis and McCoy Tyner. Sweet. |

The pace of downtown activity is pretty decent now, and with Greektown Casino and all those fine places to eat and drink, I would expect sufficient crowds to warrant multiple street performers. That's cool that they didn't pack up and leave after those downpours earlier in the evening, though. |

The sad thing Detroit has laws on the books limiting the areas of street performers and they tend to be enforced. I photographed a wedding several years ago that a City councilperson was attending, the ceremony was in Detroit, the reception was at Cleary in Windsor. The date of the wedding coincided with the Busker's Festival before it was relegated to the current confined area. I pulled the councilperson to the window to view the activity and asked him why street theatre was outlawed in Detroit when it was obvious so many enjoy it. He evaded my question. In my travels many of my most vivid memories are of the street performers I spent time with, watching the acts and talking with them over a beer or two. Other cities encourage street art. Why are the barriers up here in Detroit to prevent such expression except under certain conditions? I watched a couple of cops threatening a guy with a guitar with his open case with an arrest if he did not stop playing and move on because he was not in the proper zone. Of course, that was an area where panhandlers abound offering nothing but their tale of woe. Just something that baffles me. |

HAHA I was by that van once when the guy offered someone walking by the street a chance to "testify." So he gets on the mic and starts rapping all "motherf-er this and f-that" and then got the mic yanked away about 30 seconds later. Awesome. |

Out of curiosity - where, other than greek town, are the zones in which street performers are legally "allowed" to perform? I didn't know we had such a law on the books. The guy that plays the 5 gal. bucket in front of the majestic never gets messed with... Also - favorite line from a detroit street performer playing a drum and singing in GCP a couple years ago: "you gotta be real cool and stay in school...get an education and don't be dumb - or you'll be on a corner jus' playin' a drum!" |
