An effort to boost employment in Michigan by speeding up roadwork will jump-start 210 local repair projects and create nearly 5,000 jobs, Gov. Jennifer Granholm announced Tuesday. Detroit will able to repave stretches of more than three dozen streets – ranging from the Lodge Freeway service drive to stretches of Lafayette, Martin Luther King, Tireman, John R and Schoolcraft. The total of Detroit’s projects: $12.4 million |

One quarter of the money (announced thus far) will be spent improving Detroit roads, which is good. It's still too much damn road spending, though. (Message edited by mackinaw on July 25, 2006) |

As a lifelong east sider.... I see that 2 of the worst stretches of roadway in Metro Detroit are currently being rebuilt, naturally both on the west side! The road surface that was voted among the worst on this Forum earlier this year was the road surface of the Paul St. overpass over the Southfield Fwy. Fortunately, the bridge is being rebuilt, and this abominable road surface will be history. A second appalling roadway has to be Ford Rd. in east Dearborn... absolutely bone jarringly awful!! But they are ripping it apart for a new roadway as we speak... |

And they've been ripping up Michigan Ave in Dearborn's eastside AGAIN. The day the Ford Rd. work started I hit Michigan, only to be nailed by a 1/2 mile backup. Fairlane Ford must be ripping their hair out. Whatever they are doing to Mich Ave seems to be heading eat pretty quick, but I was still suprised to see them out there after it had already been dug up for so long previously. |

You make a valid point. We've come to the point where government spending on public works is seen as a possible remedy for the recession. That is how the newspaper is even portraying it. This is a valid tactic, but the amount spent by the government has to remain in check. |
