It's official. All Detroit homeowners have to pay a $300 fee for garabage pick up and here's the proof.

Since 1976 Detroiters have paid for garbage collection with a 3 mill property tax. That tax has now been eliminated and replaced with an annual fee.

The 3 mill rate had not changed for 30 years and did not cover the City's increased cost of managing solid waste collection and disposal.

This fee allows the Department of Public Works to operate, rehire employees, clean up illegal dumping sites and provide curbside bulk trash pickup four times per year.

How do I apply for a senior homeowner discount?

1. Pick up an application for a solid waste fee discount at:
• City Treasurer's office
Coleman A. Young Municipal Center
2 Woodward Ave., Room 136

• Neighborhood City Halls

2. Follow the instructions on the application.

3. You will be required to provide proof of your identity, address,
age and income:

• Valid driver's license, passport or other form of
government-issued photo ID

• Last year's City or Federal Income Tax Return or
notarized affidavit of income.

Failure to apply or to pay the fee will result by garnishing on your property by income tax refund, a lien of your property, and any wages or salaries. So look out for your bill.
