The fences are finally up for the demolition of the Lindell AC building. The same company that demo'd Husdons is in charge of this project.

lol.. well considering the size of Hudons.. and the relatively small amount of damage on tracks... I HOPE they don't mess this one up.

Anyone know the ET on the new transit center ground breaking?

They broke ground for the transit center several years ago, and again after Rosa Parks died.

All I can say is it is about dammed time.

Actually Homrich contracted with another company, CDI, to handle most of the Hudson's demolition. Homrich did the site investigation, preparation, and the debris cleanup, but CDI did the design and set up the charges. Given their expertise, and certain situations within the building, it probably couldn't have been done any better than it was.

CDI's site has an interesting article on the difficulties involved in the Hudson's demolition.

It amazes me that the demolitions of historic structures always occur on a Sunday. Probably, so it does have any impact on the business district. Right, right!

For some reason, I just never drank at AC all those years I was legal. Think I was too intimated to enter the bar because that was the old man's bar, the legendary bar of Norm Cash, McClain, Karras and so many other childhood legends. Finally glad to have broken that spell though and catch a drink at Lindell's AC before it shut down.
The barkeep not only had stories of his dad, Norm Cash, and other Tiger favorites but also had photos of the Beatles at Olympia that have yet to be published. It was definitely a good evening at the old bar.
There was also a photo of Stevie Yzerman holding court at Lindell's with Konstantinov, Draper, MCarty, Federov, & company. Yzerman, after the final preseason game of each year, would bring all the Wings down there and have them partake in a round of burgers and beer. The barkeep remarked that Yzerman definitely knew what he was doing; getting his players to acknowledge and recognize the long, passionate history of sports in Detroit that they were now a part of. A unique sport's bar. In fact, they also made the claim they were the very first sport's bar. Well, it was definitely tops in my book.

quote:

Exactly...you didn't hear a fucking word out of their mouths on this one. Maybe it wasn't an architecturally "significant" structure...but there was more history on the bathroom floor of the LAC than there was in the entire Madison Lennox. Sonny Elliot used to have his office above the bar. Billy Martin scrapped in the alley....Paul Hornung, Alex Karras, gambling scandals...even the name AC has a rich history to it. You think a place like this would be torn down in Boston without a fight? Probably not.
