I was looking at the list of 100 best places to live according to CNN Money. Detroit is not one of the best cities, but the Ann Arbor/Detroit area does have five top 100 cities which ties it with the Dallas/Ft. Worth area for second place, right behind NYC. I, like many of you, think lists like these are a load of crap and don't really agree with most of the results. The five Michigan cities were Ann Arbor, Farmington Hills, Sterling Heights, Warren, and West Bloomfield. West Bloomfield and Ann Arbor, I can see that, but Warren? Anyways, here's the link: http://money.cnn.com/magazines /moneymag/bplive/2006/states/M I.html |

In case people didn't know, Warren made the top 5 best cities in Michigan list. WHY? I have no idea. It's NOT one of the best cities for black people. In addition, where the hell is Grosse Pointe on that list??? (Message edited by ltorivia485 on July 18, 2006) |

Wow that's a joke. I gotta look into this, but I think there was a population criterion that even the 5 GPs together wouldn't meet. The Grosse Pointe's population is rather astounding, though, considering their small size. This just shows how blind the judges are, looking at stats that would indicate 'safety' or 'efficiency' or 'investment quality,' but not looking into real quality of life indicators, i.e. does the city have a quality downtown? (all those municipalities other than A2 sure don't), are there any large walkable areas? Can you get by without a car? How 'bout parks and recreation? This society is just so used to bland suburbia...we are giving prizes to West Bloomfield Twp. and Sterling Heights??? Amazing. |

Mark Steenburgh, who keeps getting re-elected by promising to "keep those Detroiters out of here." |

Two east side suburbs and two west side suburbs, is this a coincidence? |

Any list that rates Columbus as one of the best big cities to live has some serious credibility issues. |

Danindc, consider also that Columbus sits on the list just between Wichita and Omaha. A list that not only consider these the best but goes as far to say they're big cities, has serious credibility issues. Consider that Dallas has some suburbs, not including Ft. Worth, that are almost as large as Wichita and Omaha. The list of big cities is controversial to say the least -- a good way to get attention. Columbus surely gets high marks for safety but this is because almost all suburbs are fairly safe and the "city" sections get diluted by large amounts of suburban parts. |

Good point Tomah! Lists in general are so subjective as to basically be meaningless. Who thinks these things up?? Journalist wannabees?? I still remember as a kid going to northern Michigan's Higgins Lake on vacation with the family and seeing the sign "6th Most Beautiful Lake in the World". Yeah right! Their claim probably lies with this... "someone said it in print somewhere... so it's worth repeating!" And then there's my favorite travel bureau line... "the number of Cathedrals in Europe claiming to be among the 6 largest in the world.... numbers at least 20!" |

good news, though! if you do a search with the "find the best place for you" link, and customize it for "plentiful leisure activities" and "affordable housing," detroit ranks 8th! in all seriousness, this is a crock... .andy... |
