http://www.crainsdetroit.com/a pps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/2006 0717/SUB/60714041/-1/toc Globe Building may be redeveloped July, 17, 2006 The city-owned Globe Building at 1801 E. Atwater St. is under scrutiny for redevelopment by Grinnell Place Development L.L.C. The Globe property is one of 107 city-owned parcels within a 67-acre area once known as the warehouse district that fell into disuse after a failed designation for casino development. Michael Dempsey, project manager for the Detroit Economic Development Corp., which is handling the property for the city, said the Grinnell Place concept is among the best he’s seen in the variety of proposals put forth in recent years. “We’d like to see something making use of the existing building, preferably including residential,” he said. Grinnell Place has not yet received a right-of-entry certificate from the DEGC but plans to pursue further investigation of the site. Grinnell Place is redeveloping a 1921 furniture warehouse once owned by Grinnell Bros. Piano Co. into lofts at 2003 Brooklyn St. in Corktown. Parts of the 55,602-square-foot former machine shop and warehouse date to 1884, according to a 2005 brownfield redevelopment assessment report, and the building has been vacant since 1999. The report says the 1.2-acre site contains several underground storage tanks ranging from 2,500 gallons to 20,000 gallons that would have to be removed. |

Not that vacant. I know several people that are using that as their residence right now. Scared the hell out of me too, the last time I was in there. Seriously, I would love to see this happen. It's in my jogging route. |

I would love to live in that place. Grinnell seems to be doing a great job with that Corktown project. But the finished product is pricey. |

Driving by here every day, I always thought this could be a cool area if it were developed like the distillery district in Toronto. We'll see! http://www.thedistillerydistri ct.com |

Wow, I would like to see some small district of some sort on the river. I just hope the city sells the land and keeps it fingers out of it. Our first test was/is EM. 313 |

Funny you say that Detroit313. It was once a happening area. The old-timers will need to fill you in, as I've only heard the fables. |

It was, at least before the casino land deals killed it. Lots of clubs, bars, concert venues and real lofts. |

The stories of the Bastille in the Warehouse District are legendary... I've met my share of great folks who used to hang there. But I'm a little too young. I missed out. The city deliberately ruined the neighborhood and left it to rot, back in the 80's and early 90's I've heard is was Greektowns only competition and the city took care of that. |

You are not that young. Hell, you are odler than many of the bartenders... A very, very missed establishment. Best place for a random Tuesday afternoon, work skipping, happy drunk. Ahhh...those were the days. |
