quote:From Le Mans to Motown: Corvette Victory Celebration Coming to Downtown Detroit July 13, 2006 GM to Salute Le Mans-Winning Corvette Racing Team with Parade and Presentations on July 18 DETROIT - A victory celebration that began in June on the podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in Le Mans, France, will continue when GM stages a star-spangled salute to Corvette Racing in downtown Detroit on July 18. The event will spotlight Corvette Racing's fifth victory in the GT1 class at the world's greatest sports car race. The celebration will begin with an awards presentation at the headquarters of Compuware Corporation, the primary sponsor of Corvette Racing, at One Campus Martius in Detroit. A parade of Corvettes that will include a Corvette C6.R race car, Corvette Racing drivers Oliver Gavin, Olivier Beretta, Jan Magnussen, Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell and Max Papis, the Indianapolis 500 Corvette pace car, and Corvettes from local clubs will then caravan via Woodward Ave. and Jefferson Ave. to GM World Headquarters at the Renaissance Center. GM employees and team members will greet the Corvette caravan when it arrives at the Renaissance Center at 1 p.m. "The men and women of Corvette Racing have achieved truly remarkable results," said Chevrolet general manager Ed Peper. "They have taken on the best of the best in America and in Europe, and they have proven that Corvette is a world-class sports car with a distinctive American accent. As we celebrate Corvette's 50th anniversary in international road racing, we want to recognize the accomplishments of the drivers, team members, GM Racing, and the affiliated sponsors and suppliers who have made Corvette Racing the benchmark in sports car competition." The Corvette victory celebration will include presentation of the 24 Hours of Le Mans trophy to Compuware Chairman and CEO Peter Karmanos, Jr. Compuware Corporation is an industry leader in enterprise software and information technology services. "Compuware is extremely proud to participate in Corvette Racing," said Karmanos, also owner of the Stanley Cup-winning Carolina Hurricanes NHL hockey team. "It's very exciting for us to see GM's great success in this endeavor. The accomplishments of Corvette Racing make everyone involved in the program winners, and I congratulate the entire team for its latest victory at Le Mans." Since Corvette Racing made its debut in 1999, Chevrolet's factory team has won 49 races (including five class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, four class wins in the Sebring 12-hour race and an overall win in the Daytona 24-hour race), five American Le Mans Series manufacturers championships and four ALMS drivers championships. The Corvette C6.R race car, the most technically advanced sports car ever developed by GM, has strong links to the production Corvette coupe and convertible and the Corvette Z06 supercar. "The Corvette Racing program has not only benefited Corvette customers through the continuous improvement of production models, but it has also proved tremendously valuable for what it has done to energize the entire GM organization from the inside," said Mark Kent, director of GM Racing. "The values that foster success on the race track also contribute to success in GM's core business: teamwork, commitment, flexibility, innovative technology and quick decision-making."

What I wouldn't give for a 1980(or 81, 82) black Corvette. A silver anniversary 1978 'Vette would be great too ...

Supersport ... LOL, I won't comment on the '83 model. Maybe that will bring the real Corvette die-hards out of the woodwork ! Perhaps someone's driven one? |

There wasn't an '83. Production of the C4 was delayed too long and it was marketed as a 1984. Not a die hard here, but I do have an '88. |

Ruined all the fun. I have been a Vette fan since I have been a toddler, but I cannot say that I share the same keeness for the 80s Vettes as I do for those in the late fifties and sixties. My favorite being the 57 fuelie. Now I am thinking of an excuss to cancel out of work... |

63-67 here, with a 67 Big Block with a 4 speed being my favorite, though untouchable in terms of price. That's ok, I'd rather build my own anyways. Get one with a 327, yank the motor, and install a nice 572 big block. I never much cared for the 84-96 bodies, nor the 68-82 for that matter. Once the 97's came out, it was the first time in my life when I liked the new Corvettes. They have only built upon that ever since, with the current model being among my all time favorites among Vettes. The Z06, with all of it's unique features like 20 pistons among the 4 calipers, it's aluminum frame, Magnesium cradle, dry sump engine, titanium rods and intake valves, and so much other stand alone features. It is truly a race car for the road. Now if they come out with the "Blue Devil," look out. They will be spankin' the fastest cars in the world! |

Would love to see that ^ ^ ^. I remember the first time I saw a ZR1, with the exaggerated convex rear and the big almost square like tail lights. I think it was in the mid 1990s. Ah .... I wish. |

Just in from automoble mag Chevrolet Corvette Z07 The Corvette C6.R LeMans racer inspires the ultimate street Vette. WHAT If the thought of the new 500-hp Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang hedging in on the 505-hp Corvette Z06’s territory raises your blood pressure, don’t despair: Corvette chief engineer Tom Wallace has a 650-hp trick up his sleeve. A new super Corvette will build on the Z06’s 7.0-liter LS7 V-8 that was developed in sync with the Corvette C6.R Le Mans racer. For this limited-production Vette, which might be called the Z07, Chevy will increase the LS7’s displacement and bolt on a supercharger to bump output by 145-hp. The Z07 will be further differentiated from the Z06 by the use of more carbon-fiber body panels and a huge hood vent aimed at killing front-end lift. In true Corvette style, Chevy will undercut competitors by pricing the Z07 at about $100,000. WHEN 2008 NAME GAMES This Corvette has been known within GM as the Blue Devil, after the mascot of GM CEO Rick Wagoner’s alma mater, Duke, and also as the Sting Ray, but we think they’ll go with Z07, or maybe Z06.R. |

I rode in Corvette #1 or #2 in 1953. Each engineer on the project was allowed to take a vehicle for a week. A. Maletske was a friend of my dads at Peace Church on E. Warren. He brought the car to our house on Wayburn and I got a ride. Sorry no pictures. |
