I was in the market this morning and saw about 3 different camera crews, a huge trailer with lighting and rigging for lights, as well as a big ass film camera following around two GOREGEOUS women. It seemed they were getting film of vendors dealing with the actors.

Any ideas what this movie may have been etc....

You were there but didn't ask anyone what was up? Curiosity would have gotten the best of me.

They seemed busy. Didnt want to be "that guy" that interrupted something. I starred for a long time at what they were doing though.

Thanks Detroitej72.

Adamjab19, sorry no new info to offer. Talked to a few people around and none had any clue what I was talking about. I plan on going back downtown tommarrow so I will try to have my moles dig up some dirt. Will keep you posted.

It was probably a commercial and not a movie.

To shoot a full blown movie here in Detroit is just full of all sorts of wranglings, red tape and dealings, I can see why production companies that shoot big pictures stay away.

I wish Detroit & Michigan would have a solid film board or a commission that would actually help cut through some of that confusion like they do in Chicago, Toronto, Seattle and other film friendly places.

Well it didn't seem big enough for a feature film or anything, possibly a comercial I suppose.

http://www.ci.detroit.mi.us/cu lturalaffair/film/Default.htm

Don't know how efficient the office is, but at least we have one.

Compare the Detroit requirements to Chicago's here: http://egov.cityofchicago.org/ city/webportal/portalContentIt emAction.do?BV_SessionID=@@@@0884726098.1153068004@@@@& BV_EngineID=cccdaddifmeigilcef ecelldffhdfgn.0&contentOID=536 927419&contenTypeName=COC_EDIT ORIAL&topChannelName=Dept&bloc kName=Film+Office%2FProcedures +for+Filming%2FI+Want+To&conte xt=dept&channelId=0&programId= 0&entityName=Film+Office&deptM ainCategoryOID=-536893355

In Chicago, they have to pay $25/day per location to film.

A cursory glance at each city's requirements seems to indicate that Detroit's requirements are lower than Chicago's.

Anyone know if this is the case, and why Chicago would seem more inviting to film-makers?

I don't know for certain. More than likely though it was a commericial, since Eastern Market was the only location they were using. Feature films tend to do a lot more.

However, it could have been "Blade", the TV show for Spike TV. I heard they might be coming back at some point to grab a few more shots.

In comparison to Chicago or NYC, the relevant beaucracies in Detroit are a breeze to deal with. Detroit's insurance requirements are a bit high ($4 million in umbrella liability), but that's not a total deal killer.

For starters, Michigan is one of 13 states that offer absolutely no incentives to filmmakers to shoot here (even fewer than 13 that if you count the fact that Alaska, New Hampshire and a few others don't have a sales tax - and a reimbursement of some or all of the sales tax is the most common incentive).

State Representative Bill Huizenga (R-Zeeland) sponsored a package that would have created incentives in Michigan that were modelled after the package that Louisiana uses. (FYI - in the pre-Hurricane Katrina days, the Pelican state had more film prodoction happen there than state except California).

Louisiana's package brought a little over $400 million worth of additional production there in 2004 - up from almost $0 prior to their incentives going into effect.

Unfortunately, Rep. Huizenga's proposal never made it out of committee in the Michigan Senate due to staunch opposition from the committee's chair, State Senator Nancy Cassis (R-Novi).

Oh, and on a related note - Spider-Man 3 was originally going to filmed in Detroit.

The director, Sam Raimi, and all of the writers are Detroit natives. They wanted to bring Spider-Man to Detroit, the way M. Night Shyamalan has brought all of his film's back to Pennsylvania. They even wrote Detroit quite specifically into the script.

However, because Rep. Huizenga's proposal was stuck in committee with no signs of coming out, the studio decided to shoot in Cleveland instead.

http://spiderman3cleveland.blo gspot.com/
http://www.cleveland.com/spide rman/

But hey - we only lost out on $40 or $50 million in jobs and investments for Michigan. I'm sure Cassis has a plan to recoup that loss.

I just wanted to follow-up on this one. I'm 99% sure that what Adamjab19 saw film the other day was a scene from an indie film called, "Evermore". It's written directed by Thomas Zambeck, who worked as a PA on "8 Mile".

http://imdb.com/title/tt080014 5/maindetails

I don't have any official confirmation of this because I don't know Mr. Zambeck or anyone on his crew. I just know that a) none of commericial crews that I know of where shooting in Eastern Market recently and b) his crew just finished shooting in Detroit.

Deductive reasoning tells me that he's the most likely person. Oh, and if anybody knows this Thomas Zambeck guy - please ask him to contact me. (Click the blue link w/ my user name for my email address).

I love the Eastern Market. My Mom & I used to go there when I was a kid. Having moved out of Michigan, I only make a trip or two back to visit every year. You all seem so knowledgeable - is there any place I shouldn't visit because it's just not safe? We do the cemeteries, Mt. Elliott, Mt. Olivet & Woodmere, but I'd love to go to the Eastern Market & the area around St. Joe's. Let me know what I shouldn't do, please. Thanks!

if you're really worried about safety, don't chill out on the far west side (?) otherwise, in the d... use common sense... don't catch yourself walking around a dark street with over growth at, say, 3am. on the other hand, i was born and raised in d, walk around some seedy shit all the time, explore abandoned buildings, run in to scrappers... etc... and i'm a nerdy white guy... just keep your eyes peeled, is all i'm saying... but it's not THAT bad, seriously... i think most crime is oppertunistic...

I live in Las Vegas. For the record, I'm not ruffled, just wanted a helpful answer. All I hear from family left in Michigan is I'm nuts for going around to the cemeteries, let alone actually drive through the area because it's so terribly dangerous. Thanks for the eats link!

Thanks!

Since I don't live in the area, I can only go by what I am told. I am amazed at the attitude here. I asked a simple question and your responses are very strange. I shall assume you wish this to be a closed circle of die hard Detroiters and no one else need to apply. p.s. I will also assume you would have to pay for it. now I'm lol :-)

You may further assume that it was rude of you to ask, in your very first posting in a pro-Detroit forum, "- is there any place I shouldn't visit because it's just not safe?... Let me know what I shouldn't do, please.! It was insulting and we're just having a little fun with it.

Sorry Karen. I don't know about folks in LV but most people in most cities don't like hearing "I'd look around more but everywhere is so dangerous." It's like saying "I'd hold your baby but I'm afraid the ugly is going to wear off on me." Ya can't help but take it personally especially since lots of us live around the areas you're asking about.

I'm not all that familiar with the cemetaries so I couldn't answer your question. Maybe someone else will take the time to answer it. Eastern Market is mostly harmless.

It's not a closed community, but when you enter someone else's home/city/neighborhood and then promptly trash it, you're setting yourself to get some nasty comments. I think it's what you call human nature. I'm sure you didn't mean to trash it but if you think about it you might realize why you received some odd (but pretty funny) responses.

Here ya go, an old thread where some of the same stick-up-their-ass overly-sensitive pounce-on-newbies-to-compensat e folks took the exact opposite stance:

https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/62684/69635.html

"You mean you were stupid enough to walk around there at night? Well you get what you deserve YOU STUPID SUBURBAN ASSHOLE!!111 You obviously aren't hip enough or keepin' it real enough!!!111"

That shit is so played out around here it's like sun coming up; you can always count on it.

quote:

I shall assume you wish this to be a closed circle of die hard Detroiters and no one else need to apply.

That's pretty much spot-on.

Seriously! It was "rude" of her to ask what places to go, and where it might be safe in a city she's only probably heard of through news reports? Relax dude. It was an honest, reasonable question.

Are you one of those people that reads an "insult" into anything and everything - or are you just having a bad day?

I cannot speak for itsJeff but it's like when I run into people who stay at the Omni and they talk about how "scary" the neighborhood is. Yeah, thanks, I live across the street.

Detroit is dangerous, people get killed, people get shot, people are dirty slobs who leave trash all over the place, people ask Gravitymachine if he's far from home because a white person dared ride a bike downtown. The place sucks.

But the tone of her inquiry was pretty damn annoying.

Cemeteries are the safest place to be :-) Unless you run into a ghost, then you're in for it. I am in Detroit ALL THE TIME and NOT ONE PERSON has ever been rude or obnoxious to me. Even stopped for directions once in Cass Corridor (back in the day when we white girls were told Cass Corridor wasn't the place to go) and folks were pretty darn helpful. I have never felt threatened in the city, not once. Maybe because of my attitude and how I carry myself. I don't put myself into situations that may not be safe like walking around anywhere at 3 am (really, what is there to do at 3 am??)

Everyone needs to take a deep breath. I didn't call Karen names or damn her to hell for all eternity. I simply pointed out - humerously I hope - that she was insulting in the way she asked for our help. If she'd played her cards right, I'll bet she'd have received a few offers to escort her around personally, as I have done for out-of=towners who have requested it on this board.

ItsJeff: I was laughing so hard at your post :-) It was humorous. I thought her post was somewhat insulting, also. Like we (Detroit as a collective) are rapists and murderers and one would need a personal arsenal to walk around. I LOVE walking around at night. So much to see and do!! Just my two cents on the people and how safe it really is.

Karenk, if you've been gone for sometime I think you'll be really pleased with how far Detroit has come. Eastern Market is a great experience and I encourage you to bring your family members with you next time you're in town.

Oh, and I agree the old Detroit cemeteries are really cool and they have GOT to be seriously haunted. I'm going to have to investigate that sometime.

Detroitteacher, her post was not insulting. It is the norm. If you've lived/worked in the city for a while you should be used to such questions and have a million canned answers ready to go. I am really surprised when Detroiters are shocked and insulted by such questions. Such questions about the safety of the city are so run of the mill.

You sensitive type people need to take everything with a grain of salt, grow thicker skin and realize many people aren't so priviliged with the knowledge you all have about Detroit. I asked this question over a year ago and was flamed beyond all hell, someone even had the nerve to imply that my tone was racist. I don't know how karenk could of asked in any nicer way than she did. Share your knowlege, thats the whole point of this forum, not scold someone for simply asking. Detroit needs as much good experience from outsiders as she can get.
Sorry for my ranting.....

Thanks Hagglerock & Eastsidedog. I have lived in Miami, there are places I know better than to go to. The same with Boston, Cleveland and Las Vegas, to name a few. I was born and raised near 8 Mile & Van Dyke in the 1950's. I knew back then the places that weren't a good idea to go to. I used to know Detroit well, but being away for so long, I know things have changed. I won't apologize for a simple question.

Karenk, instead of listening to your relatives here who live in the safe suburbs and NEVER come to Detroit anyway, I suggest you rather watch movies set in Detroit. I highly recommend Robocop - part 1. It really portrays the murder, mayhem, chaos that Detroit has been and is to this day and shows the raw reality of life we inner city Detroiters live with on a daily basis. It gives you survival tips too.

Eastsidedog: I wasn't the original one who said it was insulting. I agreed with who said it was. I get the "aren't you scared" question ALL the time. My answer is just what I posted. No, never am I scared (except the time the white guy jumped in my truck on my way to work...at Joy and Evergreen telling me because I am white I should drive him somewhere). Needless to say, I jumped OUT of the truck, keys in hand. A whole lotta black man (he must have been 7 ft tall) pulled up in a YUGO and assisted me in getting the psycho bastard OUT of my truck. He mistakenly thought he was my husband (which I clarified RIGHT away).

That story is always good for laughs and the people at work still raz me about it (I was late and had to explain the whole scenerio).

Did I find her post a bit on the negative side? Yes.

KarenK, You have found the least safe part of the City: posting a question on the DetroitYES forum.

But seriously, have a great visit and don't miss the Elmwood Cemetary, which is not far from Eastern Market.

karenk - don't listen to these knuckle heads. *we're all* (except for pacy_pacy, thecarl, and misscleo) detroiters to the max who love our town and get easily agitated when someone disses our turf. never-the-less, i really don't believe you were out of line - god knows there ARE dangerous parts of this city... better she asks than DOESN'T ask, boys... anyway, enjoy your visit, and don't let a few jerk-faces dampen your mood.

Karen, if I didn't know better I would have thought you edited out the question that got some of these peoples feathers ruffled. There was certainly nothing wrong with the question(s) you asked.

The only cemetery I'm familiar with is Mt. Olivet, which I go to quite frequently. I feel totally safe in the newer section when I visit my mothers grave, but the the older section is another story. On the occasions that I do go over into the older section to visit some relatives graves my head is on a constant swivel keeping an eye on what's around me. The lack of people and the large monuments in that section makes it the perfect setup for someone to commit a criminal act if they wanted to. I was just there the other day, the only person in the older section at 2:00 in the afternoon and I thought to myself I'm a sitting duck if someone wanted to rob me or take my car.

If you go to Mt. Olivet (Older section)make sure you've got someone else with you if not a third person. Chances are slim anything is going to happen, but like I stated earlier it's the perfect setup for a crime to take place.

.....I mean yeah, how dare someone infer that Detroit is anything less than disneyland north. freaking idiot!...... /sarcasm off

This type of 'attack people who question the safety of detroit' always invokes the image of the emperor having no clothes, and the pesants gawking over the fine outfit he is sporting. It's quite obvious that there are places in this city that you wont be greeted with a hearty pat on the back and a 'Welcome, outsider!'. It's probably pretty wise to know where these places are when you live 2500 miles away and plan on exploring alone.

I thought this tread was about a movie being filmed in Eastern Market? Who is the high-jacker?

Then do it. Help the lady with her perfectly reasonable request and give her a list of places where she won't get mugged at Eastern Market. I'm sure Andylinn, Fishtoes and Rjk will help you.
