Thank God! The last thing Detroit needs is a bunch of Republicans in town. Detroit was, is, and always should be, a Democratic stronghold. The Republicans are not friends to the working people of Detroit.

Two things that my father taught me and that I learned growing up in Detroit:
-Vote Democratic.
-Support the unions.

1980 was here...Im by no means a republican,. but anything that brings lots of people into the city and national attention is good. Besides, we'll have more protesters lol...but yes Detroit did drop its bid for both RNC and DNC in 2008.

DETROIT WINS BID FOR 2008 REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION

RNC Site Selection Committee Recommends Detroit to Host Presidential Convention

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick today expressed his enthusiasm for the Republican National Convention (RNC) Site Selection Committee's recommendation of Detroit to host the 2008 Republican National Convention. After months of bidding led by Mayor Kilpatrick, the RNC selected Detroit for the first time in its history (?). The Convention, which will take place in Ford Field, is expected to generate over $150 million in economic activity and put Detroit firmly at the center of the world's stage. Nearly 50,000 people are expected to attend the convention including over 15,000 members of the media.

"The Republican National Committee will make history by coming to Detroit for the 2008 National Convention," said Mayor Kilpatrick. "This is an incredible boost for Detroit and the Republican National Committee's decision shows that if you want to promote your ideas and vision for the country, there's no place better in the world to do it than Detroit. I can't thank President Bush and the Republican National Committee enough for their faith in Detroit."

IF ONLY IT WERE TRUE. =(

I don't see Detroit thriving from a Democratic agenda either. What has the democratic party done in the last 25 years for the working man here in Detroit?

Jokerman:

Cites don't try to attract political convensions on account of the politics involved...they're just after their money...it's no different than trying to attract the All-star game or Superbowl...it just brings an influx of cash into the region

Guess what, Jokerman? There already are a bunch of Republicans in Detroit. They're your coworkers, your bartenders, in the bands you see, possibly among your friends---although you seem very intolerant so perhaps not there---and in every other faction of the population you encounter.

Yes, there are Republican musicians. It may very well be 10%. That doesn't mean they aren't in Detroit, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Jokerman and yourself, which was the point I was making. Republicans and Libertarians don't generally go around with bumper stickers and buttons and the rest of the Democrat/Liberal merch you guys seem to love, so we tend to remain undetected more often than not.

Every four years cities fight over the Republican and Democratic conventions. Detroit should be different...and go third party. Try to attract the Libertarian Party convention, the Green Party convention, hell while we are at it let's get the Natural Law and Prohibition Party to convene in Detroit. Think about it, the Days Inn on Jefferson would be booked solid for the entire summer of 2008! Does Lenora Fulani still have a political party? Invite Lenora and her eight friends as well. Fringe Fest '08 Detroit...everyone is welcome even John Schmitz!

Thankfully, they have not yet taken away our first amendment rights, so we are all free to express our opinions on this site. That's what makes this nation great.

They haven't taken away any of your rights. Except, like, to allow people to smoke on private property in certain cities.

I'm aware Nixon is dead. It was a joke. Much akin to the modern republican party. As far as your rights are going, you may want to look into the present administrations take on those (Wire taps, arrests and imprisonment without due process, etc.)As far as republicans and stickers go, I'm clearly finding them abnoxious and continously in my face. I'll take a walk and post some photos if you're doubt as to their existence. I'm not saying the democrats are the best and only answer. What I am getting at is the Republican party (and this present version of it particular) has done much to harm the city of Detroit. Why invite the fools into town that are tanking your economic engine?

uh.. yeah. Just look what they did to Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Miami, San Diego, San Francisco, Pittsburgh... oh, wait.

Your the fool if you cannot see where the blame for tanking the economic engine squarely lies.

I think he was suggesting they were past hosts of the Republican National Convention.

Let them have the GOP and even the Democrats, as the one political party opposed to sprawl and capable of stopping it, I know the United Fascist Union will be in Detroit for Fringe Fest '08!

And no I didn't make the UFU up...

quote:

It is my intention to run for President in the election to be held in November 2008, because I believe we need more political movements in this country which should be every spectrum of the rainbow. I see not only a need for new grass roots movements in this country, but also, for the average man to step into the political arena and take an active role in government.

A Fascist candidate for President will shake up the driftwood and cause a few minds to get busy. We must break the two-party monopoly in conventional politics in this country if we are to preserve the American people's Freedom of Choice. We must create new political movements that the masses can polarize around if we are to keep the general public interested in politics, of those, surely one can be Fascist.

We must end the reign of terror of the capitalist elite, which has driven the middle-class to the brink of extinction and holds the poor down to a loathsome level where they are no better than medieval serfs. Corporate Statism, an economic system under which government and corporate interests cooperate with each other for the betterment and general welfare of the nation, whereby government makes a profit for the people instead of exploiting them is the perfect antidote to capitalism.

To correct the flaws in modern society the United Fascist Union recommends: Halting the monopolies on utilities; imposing a strict censorship on the press; halting urban sprawl; and enacting rules of public conduct which police would rigidly enforce.
