I am finishing off my basement and am doing a "theme" of old Detroit Buildings and landmarks with pictures. I have found some great resources for the Hudson's building, Edgewater Park and others. However, I would like to make an 8 X 10 framed photo of the old Vernor's sign that used to stand. I can't find a decent picture anywhere. Does anyone have a good picture they would like to share with me or possibly point me in the right direction? Thanks!

The Free Press sells (not cheaply) reprints in various sizes of any photograph taken by a Free Press photographer. There may well be a photo of the Vernor's sign available, but you might have to search through reams of microfilm to find one and get the info you need for the reprint.

I checked the WSU Virtual Motor City site, and they only have a couple pics of the Det. River-vicinity Vernor's plant. Maybe there's also a closeup of the sign in the thousands of pics that haven't been digitized yet. I wonder if Wayne will let researchers look through in person *all* the photos?

This one?

Found it on the web using GIS(googel image search). Don't know the source of it. It had a white background which didn't look right.

I didn't know whether Shanker34 was referring to that sign or the equally large one atop the pre-Civic Center downtown building. I don't think the image Hornwrecker posted would look too good enlarged to 8 x 10.

I am looking for the sign that Hornwrecker posted, I'm just looking for a clear copy that I can make an 8 X 10 out of. I can't even Photoshop the one that is posted (I found it in a Google search too). It's too grainy and when printed really loses resolution. I didn't think this search would be so hard! : )

When that was being taken down, a guy by the name of Brad Hurdado bought it.
He was a producer at WXYZ for Kelly & Company.
I have no idea if he still has it, or where he is.
He did go on to become the exec producer of Povich.
It might be worth a shot of trying to find him.
Maybe you could put the sign up in the back yard :-))

I believe the sign Hornwrecker posted is from the post-Civic Center plant that used to be farther up Woodward.

Hornwrecker, where did you find that Vernor's photo? I looked all over Google but couldn't find it.

I just redid the GIS for vernors+detroit and the photo shows up on a Detnews link.

GIS

The original might be at WSU/VMC, but I haven't seen a scan of it yet.

There is also an artist who sells a hand colored version of the sign from a different photo, Joanne Domka.

I tried to do a search for Brad Horado on google and at the Maury site without any results.

I'm not familiar with WSU/VMC. What is that?
