I'm taking a potential $$$$$ donor out for lunch today. It needs to be in the city, and preferably not downtown, as our organization's work is primarily within neighborhoods.

Any suggestions for a positive Detroit experience minus coneys?

La Dolce Vita at McNichols and Woodward is very nice.

If midtown counts as a neighborhood, Twingo's is great, but I suspect you are looking further out.

Corktown has Slows, and Eph McNally's, and Bally Cork (I can never spell that) if they are open for lunch.

As for being full out in mostly residential areas though, apparently I'm not much help.

Hmm... I would say the Alley Grille in Greektown Casino.. but you don't wanna piss of someone who opposes gambling.

hmmm Coach Insignia? Do you have a DAC membership? If so that might be a good move.

I can't think of anywhere else unless you want to take them somewhere simple...

Yeah, I'm not looking for anything over the top. I'm trying to push the point that there is life outside of downtown and Woodward. He's already eaten on my company dime at Coach...no need to go that far again.

See if Bakers Keyboard lounge is open for lunch today at Livernois just south of 8 Mile. The food there is great!

What about something in Mexicantown. If you're trying to push the idea of vitality, that would be a great choice.

Or one of the SE Asian places on Conant.

I agree with Hamtown Steve. Mexican Town! A little off the beaten path and they'll see the new housing, restored housing, matrix theatre, and other community type centers.

Yeah the Conant neighborhood might do the trick, it seems. If the original Buddy's is good enough, I'd do that.

If you want to show resiliance in a neighborhood that needs help, try the Ivanhoe Cafe for a great lunch in a neighborhood decimated by the Poletown debacle and then crack. For more vital neighborhoods, I second the Vince's and the Blue Pointe suggestions. Sindbad's is a cool place too.

I tried grand city grille twice already, first time the service was atrocious and the food was mediocre. Second time the service was ok and the food was mediocre. Hopefully it's different by now because the atmosphere is really quite nice.

I took him to the Dakota Inn. He was actually born in Germany, so it was a "unique experience" as he put it. I'm guessing he enjoyed it, as I ended up getting a 4 figure donation to our program by the end of the day!!

Great news there! Guess you don't need my suggestions anymore but I was going to second Pointe BBQ and Bakers - great and abundant food. Dakota was a great classy choice though.

I'll add that to my list Kilgore, as I have to do such events every week or two.
