In my limited experience, any gym that has ever offered 9 months for $99 has been out of business within 2 months.
Angie Wells did it at the old Powerhouse, and today I noticed this deal being offered at the new Powerhouse on Jefferson.

Is this place gonna cut and run?

They might be losing business because of the new Downtown Y....

I've never been a member of Powerhouse, but it seems that this organization doesn't operate a very reliable chain/franchise. The number of loction changes and sudden closings would make me think twice about doing something long term (ie. longer than 1 month).

Personally I'd go with someone a little more reliable like the Y or a gym that has been in business at the same location for a long time.

I want to be wrong...but I got a bad feeling about this. I'm not sure he lost much business to the Y though.

I looked into getting a membership there and found their staff incredibly rude to the point that I was asking someone a question over the phone and she hung up on me. I called back and said "uh, did you just hang up on me?" and she said "I thought you were done"

It was actually kinda comical...

I just dont see how a gym can survive with a membership of $11 a month with no contract.

LMAO! I was just thinking that exact thing while at the Powerhouse yesterday, even mentioned it to a guy in the locker room "So, you think the gym's closing? I see the $99 specials." FYI, Rosedale did the same thing shortly prior to their closing. Fortunately, I've yet to be screwed outta my money, as each Powerhouse has honored the time I had left when starting a new membership at their gym, including when I rejoined at the Jefferson gym after Rosedale closed.

If this one closes up shop I'm heading up to the original I think, up in Highland Park, as it's been a part of the community since the Powerhouse inception. Plus, I simply can't justify forking over $500 or so a year for a gym like the Y and have it lack many of the machines I use. I'm sorry, but pulley machines just plain suck and seldom have enough weight on them.

Are you sure it was 99$ for 9months?!?!? Or was it for 3 months, because that was what it was before.

I just quit my membership at that Powerhouse a few months ago.

Yeah the workers there are kinda rude, but I like the owner because he's really trying to put something good together and seems to work very hard.

His employees aren't much to write home about except for the dude on Sundays.

But the equipment and space is awesome, but no TV's. Hours could be a bit better, especially on week-ends.

I've been going to the Powerhouse in Highland Park for 2 years. Recently remodeled, friendly clean, cheap! $150 per year for police or firefighters and usually $199-$299 per year for everyone (depends on what specials are currently offered). Always negotiate with them. Previous to this I had been at the Gold's gym at 12 Mile and Stephenson for about 12 years.

The deal is 9 months for $99...payment must be in the form of cash or check, no credit cards accepted.

I would suggest to anyone considering taking this deal...to call Powerhouse HQ's or the Highland Park location and ask if they intend to honor the full nine months if the Jefferson location goes under. You have to be preemptive because the law allows very little recourse once a gym folds...thats why these joints make a last minute money grab.

Exactly. Just do what Sport does, set your TIVO, and watch Oprah when you get home.
