“During the depression, demonstrators crossed this bridge while trying to take a petition for relief to Henry Ford. Shortly after crossing, the jobless workers were fired on and five workers died in what became known as the Ford Hunger March.” Does anyone know the names of these five (5) workers that were murdered by Henry Ford’s goons and where there are buried? Brought to you by Ford Motor Company! Livedog2 |

Names of those killed: Joe York, Joe DeBlasio, Coleman Leny, and Joe Bussell. These men are buried at Woodmere Cemetary An African American man, Curtis Williams was also killed (he died a short time after the others). Woodmere wouldn't allow a black man to be buried next to the others so they cremated him and scattered his ashes...some say over the Ford Rouge Plant. |

And to think that Packard just accepted union organization as something that was here to stay, and did not fight it. They regularly upped hourly pay to avoid strikes (remember those?). Look who's still in business. |

There is a wonderful jazz opera called "Forgotten" about the hunger marchers and a radio host/reverend who was mudered because of his support of the Ford organizing drive. Written by Steve Jones of the Labor Heritage Society - his great uncle was Lewis Bradford, the subject of the opera. When he died, it was officially ruled accidental death. Steve had the body exhumed and re-examined. It was then ruled, as the family had always known, murder. It's never far from my mind how violent these companies were and still are. The anniversary of the Detroit Newspaper strike is coming up, and many of the strikers view that day as a yearly reminder of the evil face of unfetterd uncontrolled capitalism. We in the labor movement do not forget the murdered hunger strikers or any of the other victims of corporate greed. |

Someone should have told those "hunger marchers" that according to today's crowd and especially Terri Schaivo's husband's attorney that they were experiencing something "beautiful and euphoric". |

Your concern for the undead and the preborn is touching, really Pacy, but we're having a conversation about history and courage and sacrifice, not political hay. |

maybe next weekend pacy can take the kids to Henry Ford Museum and ask to see Henry Ford's Nazi Medal...or some vintage issues of the Ford Times with "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" in them. hmmmm.. but that would require reading, so scratch it... |

Barn: They just don't have that stuff on display, it's in the archives. I've seen it (used to work at HFMGV). |

Oh, I see, right now is not a good time to show that the liberal pendulum has swung so far it came full circle and struck itself. |

Livedog: I notice the same type of pansie flower in each shot. Any story behind that? Seems to be the only one. Would be interested to hear about it if there's something about it. |

Oh, just thought maybe it was a symbol for something other than the obvious since there was only one lone flower. Thanks, I was just curious if there was a story behind them. |
