I was downtown yesterday and ran into these friendly fellows in Cadillac Square that explained their sweet, little Law Enforcement System to me while I photographed their work. This vehicle drives down the street and the two cameras mounted on top reads the license plates of all the cars on both sides of the street. Once it reads the license plates the license plates are coded in an OCR program. Next, it matches against the Michigan DMV records for any outstanding traffic tickets. If it finds outstanding unpaid tickets a dispatcher sends this crew out to access the situation. When the final decision has been made this is the result. "A boot!" And, it doesn’t come off unless you pay all of your outstanding tickets. Slick, isn’t it? Also, kind of Orwellian! Livedog2 |

This appears to be most efficient enforcement system Detroit has seen in decades. B&SE and DPW should take notes. Kudos to Ron Ruffin and his team. |

"When the parking-control officers come to remove a boot, the first thing they have to do is unlock the padlock. Since the city is buying about 100 of the monsters, it seems highly unlikely that every boot will have a different key. In other cities, like Denver, a single master key unlocks them all. That means, of course, than an anarchist thug with a penchant for troublemaking (or a wily hustler with an eye for a quick profit) could easily dismantle and remove the boot from some poor innocent scofflaw's illegally parked car, take the thing home, bust the lock off and pay a less-than scrupulous locksmith to make up a new key--a key that would instantly unlock every boot in the city. Of course, the city can always change all the padlocks on a regular basis (although they don't come cheap). But if we know this city, the pirates will soon be making and selling the keys faster than the cops can replace the locks, forcing the taxpayers to pour ever-increasing sums of money into a parking law- enforcement mechanism." |

Goat- That episode of the simpsons came to mind for me also. lol....Unfortunately it hasn't been aired since before 9/11 because of the scene with the new yorkers arguing between the WTC. (and rightfully so, I suppose) anyways, this seems like a good system - lets hope they stay one step ahead of the "pirates" |

how bout paying your goddamn tickets... in macomb county, you dont pay, they lock u up for 30 days... i know of several people that got picked up as far as saginaw to go to the MCJ for 30. Its not that hard... we need to get people used to obeying the law... in Detroit... its hard to get a traffic ticket anyway unless your doing something completely retarded. |

Sounds like this city department is doing its job. Anyone know what the threshold of tickets is before you get the boot? Probably 3 or 5 tickets? I'd assume they wouldn't put on the boot if you only have 1 unpaid parking ticket. Lakesuperior -- Speeding tickets are completely unrelated to parking tickets, so I don't think you'll ever get the boot for speeding tickets. |

Simmer down there Alexei...... The simple rule of thumb is this.... Pay your speeding tickets, they can and will come back to haunt you. The offending police jurisdiction can notify the Secretary of State, and that is another can of worms. Parking and non moving violations.... as long as you don't go back to that jurisdiction, you're probably safe. |

If your car is ever boot-ed, a pair of bolt cutters quickly takes care of the problem. |

Alexei, Surprisingly, it's hard to get out of illegal turn tickets. Even if it's a right on a "no turn on red" Speeding tickets are a different story though. |

YOU WILL PAY MORE FOR MASS TRANSIT WITH YOUR LOCAL AND COUNTY TAX DOLLARS. Unless you have the courage to vote NO next August 8, 2006 to force our state and industry leaders to better support public mass transit. And you will pay your downtown Detroit parking tickets. Detroit collects more in parking tickets then from the bus fare-box and this is what you will support next August. Unless you vote NO. |

trainman, i believe you would make an EXCELLENT spin doctor... for example working for a political party... you have an uncanny ability to relate any issue to public transit, though you could use more frequent references... |

My reference is the Detroit News on this one. Detroit lost $20 Million in one year on parking tickets but collects about twice this which equals $40 Million. DDOT as per the Federal Transit Database collects about $35 Million per year. 35 is less then 40. Yes, it's true. Detroit already has among the highest transit taxes in the World. Why do you think the Michigan Department of Transportation desparately wants out of the public passenger bus business? Our leaders are not shy about this and the need to lower costs. |
