I no longer attend the Taste Fest, it has gotten out of hand. Orginally it was intended to allow the people to sample the wares and maybe make decisions as to what restuarants they may want to try in the future. I refuse to shell out 4-6 dollars or more to sample 2 or 3 rib bones. The other fare is equally rediculous in price. What if you have a large family...stay home that's what. The Taste Fest has evolved into a Waste Fast as in money. |

Jazz lovers, don't miss the Blackman/Arnold World Jazz Quintet MONDAY at 5 on the stage at Cass that faces Woodward. Caught this guitar wizard Blackman down at Bert's a few weeks back...he is a smoking hot player, and totally down-to-earth. He comes all the way in from the far-western suburb of Ann Arbor...don't miss 'im. |

I must second Gannon's recommendation on Blackman and Arnold (John Arnold). John Arnold's broken beat stuff is also awesome. Who says you have to buy anything there? It's a free event. It takes a true hater to hate the TasteFest. |

@Dabirch - It wasn't about the money.... It was the fact that Historic Fort Wayne did a 'bait-n-switch'! There was almost no mention of a price change from last year until I got to the guard shack! If I had known ahead of time that it would cost $18.00, I probably would have paid it. You should know a person before you insult them!!! As far as the TasteFest goes, my family will be going. We go every year. It's a tradition. The foods good, and it's a great way to try out foods to see if we want to go to the restaurants later. The music is just outstanding! |

Whenever I hear someone complain about the cost of the food at this event...I ask them to remember that this is a free, family-oriented event touting our city while raising money for causes that benefit the city and the less fortunate of its residents...see the descriptive text below from the TasteFest website {bold text is mine): WHAT IS COMERICA TASTEFEST? The Comerica TasteFest is a five-day outdoor food and entertainment festival in Detroit's New Center during the Fourth of July weekend. The event is a family affair which offers free national and local talent on four stages, over 40 Michigan restaurants selling "tastes" of their specialties, free stage shows, activities for children, and a marketplace of unique Detroit products and memorabilia. The Comerica TasteFest is free and open to the public. The festival is supported by many of Detroit's top radio and television stations, as well as the local print media. Over 500,000 people attend the event each year from throughout southeastern Michigan and Ontario. The Comerica TasteFest is produced by the New Center Council, Inc. (NCC) a 501(c)3 nonprofit business organization dedicated to the development and management of New Center as a vibrant, diverse and economically healthy district. New Center is the northern anchor of Detroit's Greater Downtown. Since 1993, the festival has generated over $1,000,000 in profit that supports NCC initiatives in the areas of public space maintenance, economic development and planning, and youth and charitable programs. In addition, NCC has used Comerica TasteFest proceeds to help produce an award-winning summer youth program at the local Fairbanks Elementary School. To date, NCC has donated in excess of $400,000 to the Fairbanks Elementary School for equipment and programs, and to produce the summer youth program. The Comerica TasteFest is a recipe for success on many levels. It supports a vital Detroit community, offers a great "City" experience for over 500,000 attendees, and provides a strong marketing vehicle for its sponsors and partners. http://www.newcenter.com/taste fest/2006/about.htm |

Thank you everyone for jacking this thread!!!!!!!!! I love the Taste Fest, and have no intention for missing it. Since I do work everyday, it is not a challenge to have the "extra cash" to go and have a great time. My baby brother (DFD) has a Wife & 3 kids, and my big brother (Commercial Painter) has a Wife & 5, and they are regulars at the Taste Fest. These fine working-class gentlemen don't complain about the prices; they get their families out there to enjoy one of the best summer festivals that Detroit has to offer. See you in New Center!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! later - naturalsister |

For those that want cheap beer there is a bar in the bottom of the Fisher Building that sells your basic beer in plastic cups for TONS cheaper than at the festival and you don't have to buy tickets. If I don't bring my own, I just keep making trips down there. It's pretty close by to most of the stages too! Oh...but the VIP tent with free beer isn't bad either |

"stay home that's what. The Taste Fest has evolved into a Waste Fast as in money." I love irony. A guy who supports the megabillion dollar fiasco in Iraq squaking about five dollar snacks... Hey, just borrow someone elses credit card like GWB! I always eat before I go, and then I enjoy the free music and the crowds, and sometimes I even score tix to the VIP tent and have free beer. When the weather's nice, riding ones bike avoids the parking hassle. Barnesfoto, frugal person. |

Audra seemed off tonight...she was rushing through songs, missing rhythms and lyrics, and the sound person didn't have a clue. There was heavy bass from two directions cluttering up the sound, I'm sure that didn't help her find her own voice. Blanche was curiously entertaining, I didn't know what to expect...but caught a few of their songs before wandering to the Howling Diablos...and then again after they quit. Howling Diablos got it on good, but ended their set early, it seemed. Never even SAW the main stage...but the people watching was superb everywhere. Then I discovered I dropped the keys to my bike somewhere...and ended up learning how long a walk it is from the New Center to Eastern Market. A-R-R-r-r-g-g-g-h-h!! |

Sat next to a guy at the counter down at Zeff's Grille this morning...and he went OFF when I asked if he was going to the TasteFest. He was pissed that the tickets went from 12 for $5 to 9 for $6 for just a taste of food. Too much for him. I don't remember the tickets being that cheap last year...I just remember bitching about the difference between the quantities they sell you and how much it costs to buy anything. They're not even multiples...so it looks to be designed to NOT allow the commonfolk to deduce how much they're paying for the food and drinks, and there is ALWAYS a remnant wasted! Has to be a conspiracy somewhere in there... I love it that the street hustlers are now asking everybody for their spare tickets when leaving...everybody has a few left over. Funny thing, the longest line was for Bert's Ribs...by far. He was cleaning up. Actually, he was cooking, but he was cleaning everyone's pocketbooks! Anybody find three keys on a square keyring...let me know. Two of 'em are round security keys. |

LOL, I followed YOUR instructions to the letter last night and spend not one dime. Ate and got my buzz on BEFORE riding up there...carried one of those leather canteens full of water, after finishing the bike's bottle. I walked around where I sat for Audra...but the security people said there had already been a good number of people back to find things they'd lost. Made me feel a 'little' better at having dropped them, but only because there were others as stupid as me...but quicker to notice and get back to look. I guess they didn't have an hour walk home first!! I'll be checking the lost and found today... |

Yeah, you're right. It MUST have been from coming down off the rush of adrenaline caused by my self-anger at losing my keys. For the record, I merely JOG marathons...heh. But I am just getting back into training, and seven miles jogging at 2 in the afternoon before the 4 mile bike ride was JUST enough to make that extra walk work! |

For $18, I could get three Paul's large pizzas and have change for another three 2-liter Faygos. And eat and drink super plenty... But having a great time at the Food Fest is OK too. |

Dave and I spent only $18 for food and tried several different restaurants' offerings. We were able to enjoy a great variety of foods from restaurants we have yet to patronize, but definitely will consider for future outings. Yes, the portions were moderate...only tastes or samples...but we didn't feel as though we didn't get enough for our money. And on top of that, the setting plus the musical acts, other performers (like the Derby Girls), vendors, and the artists were top-notch!! |

I went 3 days this weekend and only shelled out $18. The pass to the VIP area helped immensely. |
