Officials expand efforts to curb gun violence in Detroit

Didn't they announce that they were expanding this a year ago? Is anyone familiar with this initiative? Is it really producing some results or is it just an excuse for politicians to grad a positive headline in an election year?

Here is a link to a cached version of the Aug. 25, 2004 Detroit News article announcing the start of the project.

Notably absent then and now is Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

If this program is working so well, why is it only spreading to the city's southwest side? Why wait to impliment it broadly throughout the city? I know gangs are mainly organized on the southwest side, but that's not to say there aren't groups of thugs elsewhere in the city.

My guess would be that besides the funding issue, the scarce resources (bottleneck to expansion) are assistant attorneys general and assistant prosecutors. Cox probably can't afford to assign any more assistant attorneys general than he has already contributed. Left unsaid is whether there have been any assistant prosecutors assigned to this project by the Wayne County Prosecutor.

Too bad this project is 40 years too late. I hope it can turn things around but by then there won't be many folks living in the neighborhoods. They'll all be downtown or long gone to the burbs.
