There seems to be two sets of stairs heading underground along 2nd Ave. on the south side of Pilgrim in Highland Park. I'm guessing this was for a tunnel across the road since there's a school there. Still, was 2nd so heavily trafficked that a tunnel made sense?

There's also seems to be other stairs along 2nd but further south. Unfortunately I do not have a cross street.

There was another one at Cass near what was recently the Burton International School. Gotta help the kiddies dodge the cars. As for the underground pedophiles ...

Before the freeways, 2nd and 3rd were quick thoroughfares to get to and from downtown.

Yes, those stairs on Second were there to allow the children from Ford School to cross the street safely and (I assume) to avoid the need for a traffic light at that intersection in the days when Second and Third were very busy one-way thorofares in Highland Park. The stairs were closed many years ago, partly out of safety concerns and also because the Highland Park section of Second Ave. was made into a two way street with stop signs at every other corner, therefore there wasn't as much speeding traffic using the street anymore.

There was a pedestrian underpass in Hamtramack on Holbrook near Brombach, it was sealed up in 1973.
