Tomorrow at 1pm is the 30th annual Detroit-Windsor Tugboat race. It begins just below the Ambassador Bridge and goes to the finish line at Dieppe Park. After the race the tugs will do a cool down circle past downtown Detroit and Hart Plaza and then tie up for the rest of the afternoon at Dieppe Park. I'll be there on the Magnetic so if anyone is watching cheer us on and give us a wave. (Message edited by BillyBBrew on June 23, 2006) |

Can you toss people overboard if it helps to win? |

Go, BillyBBrew!!! Wish I could be there... Just to bring the two threads together...the earlier posting has links to a couple websites with photos of last year's race. Looks like a lot of fun. https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/5/75079.html?1151092226 Thornetta Davis (with Dave on drums) played at the Riverfront concert tonight outside the Wintergarden. He mentioned that a couple tugs came by to listen to the music! |

I wish the cities would publicize this kind of thing more often. It seems like a fun event to go and watch. |

I just happened to think about it as I was heading for bed. I know we won't win, but we'll sure have fun riding around in all the wakes of the bigger tugs. Plus it's a chance to dress up the old girl and take her out for a "night on the town" or day as the case may be... |

On July 14th the DFD will participate in a tug of war match against Windsor fire. Come out and watch us defend our title. |

Made it down to Hart Plaza with the wee ones just in time to catch the slow-motion invasion of tug craft. Looks like the real action was at the carnival across the straits, but I gotta say there was a bit of that summer magic in the air. The Detroit Princess leading the parade, the fire boat spraying water, the tugs chugging their hearts out, dozens of folks languidly taking it all in -- one family of whom lent us their binoculars to peep the race action. A really cool way to pass an hour with the kids. Which tug were you on BillyBBrew? Looked like the best place to watch this race was in on-deck. |

is was pretty cool, though if I go next year I will be going to the canadian side to watch or at least bringinn binocs, and what was with the cool down lap? the boats, save for 2 or 3 didn't come anywhere near the american side. still a pretty neat event

The real question is whether or not anybody got asked "You're a long way from home ain't ya?" while watching the festivities. |

I was on the Magnetic. We didn't take any trophies but it was, by far, the most rockin' and rollin' and wet race I've been to. It was alot of fun. I apologize for not remembering to recommend watching from the Canadian Side. One of the best stories I've ever heard was from someone who's dad took them down to watch the races as a teenager. (when there were a LOT of big tugs in the races) He vividly remembers the wakes of the tugs going up into the sewer outfalls and blowing a manhole cover 6 feet in the air. Pretty cool story. |

Gravitymachine, I'm curious where you were watching from. I was on the river walk right near cobo, almost underneath the people mover tracks, and yeah I couldn't see much either. Still, a beautiful day to head to the river. |

Billybbrew---What about the days when the tug Atomic won it all? Or am I going back too far in Detroit history? Bill Hoey also had a tug or two envolved as I recall. |

Gaelic did not have tugs in the race this year for the 2nd time in 30 years. They had other commitments. The Atomic is still around and now owned by a company called McKeil out of Hamilton, ONT. I believe that is where the tug is now. http://www.mhsd.org/photogalle ry/detroit-tugrace-54.jpg photo above is from my collection. 1954 Tug race. Note the Roen belching a smoke ring...The Atomic is the tug on the left of the pic. |

We got a frontrow seat for the Tugboat Race from the Diamond Queen, the usual boat which operates Diamond Jack's Detroit tour. Tug Race day is one of the few days we'll run the tour in reverse (starting toward the Ambassador Bridge first rather than heading for Belle Isle) to offer the best views of the racing tugs, and to blow the horn at them! Then, we come up the Windsor side and pass all the tougs docked at Dieppe Gardens nice and close. Note to self, see you onboard next year! |
