RIght behind the State, along Elizabeth, between the front section of the building and the auditorium, there is an unusual looking stone (or faux stone) building. Everything is boarded up. Is it part of the Palms building or is it something else? |

Some one once told me that that was somew kind of studio when I asked a few months back. In fact just the other evening I saw someone go inside. I wanted to ask then, but I let the opportunity pass... |

That building was a poulty market in the 1930's, and later was Carter electric. Chuck Forbes owns it. |

That's Ghetto Recorders, Jim Diamond's studio. I'm sure you all have heard about the White Stripes vs. Jim Diamond lawsuit that was in the news last week. |

Urban legend calls that “The Green Hornet’s House”. The guy who produced the radio show “The Green Hornet” also produced many of the theatrical productions in and around the Grand Circus area. This building was a crash pad that he built for himself so he wouldn’t have to drive a long way home after late nights in the theater. In the story of the Green Hornet he lived in an urban area, much like Detroit at the time. His house had a garage that opened directly to the street. That was where he (The Green Hornet) kept his car called “Black Beauty”, I think. This building was allegedly the model of the Green Hornet’s house. You can see where the garage door was. For the longest time there was a curb cut in front of a garage door. I always wanted to renovate that building. It might serve as a model for a new kind of “Downtown” living. |

It actually is a really interesting space. I haven't been in there in a few years, but I liked it a lot. You go up a narrow stairway right inside the front door. At the top of the steps is the living space (Diamond doesn't live there anymore). Each room is at a lower elevation than the doorways, with steps going up and down from each doorway. So it gives the impression of the rooms being 'sunken'. Then there's a door going off into what seems to be an old warehouse space. That's the recording room - all concrete walls and columns. Then there's another room off of that where the mixing console and effects processors are at. Many local, national, and international bands have recorded there (and still do). |
