I am a bird researcher at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, coordinating the field work for a breeding bird project for Wayne County. I know there are many more Ring-necked Pheasants nesting in the city of Detroit than I have records for. Have you seen a female pheasant this year with babies within city limits? If so, if you can let me know the nearest cross streets, I can make sure the data get included in our project (all the data is coded by nine-square-mile "blocks", so I have to know a pretty exact location). A date, or close to it, is also needed. You can send me a quick email at atlas.birds@gmail.com I can take similar info from elsewhere in the county, but am most interested in the city right now. If this is successful, I might ask you for information on other species! You can read more about the project here: http://www.umd.umich.edu/dept/ rouge_river/bba.html Thanks for your help. The east side, specifically the areas between the river and Warren and downtown and about Connor are where you'll find most of the phesants in Detroit. I don't know of any exact nesting sites. Here are two groups you may want to contact who could provide eyes and ears on the ground: Detroit Eastside Community Collaborative (contact through Warren Conner Development Corporation) http://www.warrenconner.org/co ntact.htm Sustainable Detroit (work with lots of kids and urban farming groups). They'd likely really enjoy this project. http://www.sustainabledetroit. org/home/index.php |

I have seen pheasants frequently in the area of Clark and Jefferson. I'll try to pay closer attention the next time I do for females with young. Good luck with your project; it sounds very interesting. |

Have seen them on Warren near Chene (extensive urban prairie), and also in Grosse Pointe Park and City (geographically could be counted with Detroit, but outside the city limits of course) |

I use to see pheasants all the time over at Peck Park over in the Cultural Center all the time. I always feared for those things when we had those roaming packs of stray dogs all over the place. I haven't seen any in years though since they've revamped the park though. |

There were at least four nesting pairs in the Dequndre cut this spring that came up to forage along St. Aubin and the empty lots south of where Joe Muers was along Gratiot and St. Aubin. I still hear them at dusk, so they are still round. Haven't seen any in 2 weeks or so though. You may also want to check the vacant lots in an around the English Village project. Two summers ago there were 3 pairs there. Whether they have moved out due to the construction I cannot say. |

I've seen the usual large number of male pheasants plus a few female pheasants around the Indian Village area, but no sightings of babies yet this year. Will keep you posted if I do see any. |

There were always quite a few around the old Softball City/State Fair Grounds area...as a side note, they are kinda easy to trap and taste great in spaghetti sauce! |

Gravitymachine, alas I don't live in that neighborhood but I do agree Peck Park is great. It's come a long way from being that drained pool and that pile of overgrown grass. Peck Park has made an amazing recovery and I think is one of the neighborhood's subtle jewels. Beyond the pheasant sightings of ages ago, I still see an occassional turkey buzzard floating around the area. I wonder what other offbeat birds we have in the area. |

Birdwoman, there was a mother pheasant nesting with about a dozen eggs at Baldwin and Agnes on Detroit's east side. This was just 2 or 3 weeks ago. I saw her sitting on her eggs every morning. I have also seen males battling it out several times earlier this year at the same intersection. There are also some pheasants that nest in the alley that runs between Baldwin and Seyburn as well, between Lafayette and Agnes. Also, last year I saw a female pheasant running across the lots with her chicks following her! Hope this helps! |

I will be watching this thread with drooling fangs. I just love pheasant sightings because then I know where to find them and there is nothing better than pheasant-under-glass. I especially like the taste of the young ones that are so tender with a rasberry vinegerette! I guess I better get my traps oiled and ready to go. It sounds like this is going to be a bonanza for me. Pheasant-under-glass with fava beans -- Mmmmm! Livedog2 |

Not so weird. Pheasant is the only thing I've ever killed and eaten. Damn tasty on the bar-b-que, just watch out for the shot. |

It is amazing the places I can get onto even when they try to keep me out. Just the other day I was in West Village throwing eggs at a particular house. Think the owners might have been out of town. |

Wait 'til next week when the owners wife is out of town and the owner will be drunk and armed to the teeth...taunting punks to come by and throw eggs at his house. |

If the owners is drinking that means he will be in bed by 9:00. I'm sure the punks won't get there until 9:30. |

As an aside to this thread: Peck Park is named in honor of Rev. William Peck who was the long-term pastor of Bethel A. M. E. Church which has served that community for generations. He came to Bethel in 1928. Currently, the church, in a new building, is on the north side of Warren at, I believe, St. Antoine. Bethel's prior home, several blocks to the north, was demolished in the mid-70's. In 1930 Fannie Peck, Dr. Peck's wife, founded an organization called The Housewives' League of Detroit whose goal was to support and promote small black-owned businesses in Detroit. |

My little bit of pheasant esoterica: On the Eastside, before the vast expanses of urban prairie, in the time before Disco, pheasants were mostly seen in the cemeteries. Populations remained small, as cemeteries tended to maintain the landscape, and cut during nesting season, as well as railroad right of ways, and industrial grounds. However, one population reservoir was available on the grounds of City Airport, where there were large areas with only Fall cutting, allowing the pheasants to bide their time, awaiting the day, when they could reclaim their demesne. Phear the Pheasant! |

We were just down by City Airport today, and were amazed we didn't come across any pheasants in all those vacant lots. But then again, it wasn't like we were going to go strolling through them. Anybody seen pheasants at Palmer Park? |

That was a cool article. There was also a peacock in southeastern Grosse Pointe Park for a time, but I'm pretty sure it had escaped from the Fisher Mansion... |
