Since the beginning of the planet's largest sports spectacle is just about 3 weeks away, I was wondering what local watering holes are the prime locations for the viewing, where lots of global football fans will congregate. I realize that ESPN claims they will be showing all 64 matches on one or more of their cable networks, so it's not as tricky finding a place w/ satellite, but global soccer is best enjoyed with a crowd and a pint, not on your own sofa.

I would imagine places with a more European heritage, like the Cadieux Cafe (or until recently, Jacoby's), are likely to have a fairly good crowd with folks that are into the games. Anyone know of any other good spots to catch the action? Even though the Canadians didn't make the cut, how a-boot places in Windsor for some real international appeal?

I watched the Champions League Final at Currents. I was one of 3, but they still put the game on for us with sound. I here good things about the Spectadium in Troy for soccer games, but that's not exactly downtown.

I'm sure they would put it on at Karras Bros. if you asked them to (assuming the Pistons aren't playing).

With the time change it should be easy to find a bar that will put the games on for you. I'm guessing you'd have most of the usual downtown places to yourself.

True enough, most of the matches are early, but there are a few that begin at 3pm, which would be perfect for ditching work and starting happy hour early, not to mention the weekend games.

According to Time magazine, all eyes will be focused on what brand of shoes will be worn by the players--Addidas or Nike. Big $$ is in the outcome.

Even though us Cauncks didn't make it (our soccer team sucks) the best bet for Windsor would be the Scottish Club on Tecumseh Rd @ Hall. I'm sure that there are others too...

Go Lions!

I don't watch soccer games on TV. Last one I saw was while visiting relatives in Germany in the 1980's. I believe it was the Brits against the Italians in Belgium (was that the World Cup?). And the next thing I knew, British hooligans caused people to panic and stampede... and 34 people died when a wall collapsed.

I decided to watch less violent sports, so I stick with Hockey!

I read an article about how Polish soccer hooligans want to have organized fist fights at this year's World Cup instead of random free-for-alls.

Personally, I think that's fucking awesome. I like a well-organized, forethinking soccer hooligan.

Gotta be some watering holes in Mexican Town showing games, though I'm not familiar with many bars down there. Or what about the Gaelic League in Corktown? Bally Cork? Shelley's has a lot of TVs, they might be a good bet. Cadieux Cafe is probably a safe bet — the Dutch are expected to be very tough this year.

Town Pump could also be a good place, what with the draught beer selection and what not.

I for one am pumped up for the World Cup. One huge consolation of moving from the D to Ferndale a year ago was the availability of WOW cable, which offers Fox Soccer Channel. That's been a godsend.

HMmm. World Cup. Yes, I think there is a bit of a stir here. The beer gardens should be fun with all the soccer crazies.

Ha ha. Acutally, for Rock and the Pointes, the real focus of interest will be whether or not the players wear socks.

If the Tigers keep playing well, I doubt it the Cup will catch on here -- unless USA makes final four.

That's like saying the Lions will win the Superbowl.

The USA will be lucky if they even advance past the group stage.

You have to watch the World Cup on Univision. They have a mad announcer who yells in Spanish non-stop (even if nothing is happening, which is most of the time) and if there is actually a goal he screams GOL GOL GOL GOL GOL GOL GOL GOL and the graphics on the screen go crazy too. It's hysterical.

Fit guys in tiny shorts running back and forth. mmmmmmmm. Miss_cleo, give it a try.

Nip, here is the schedule of the matches:

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/w orldcup/fixtures?&lpos=wcnav&l id=gn_sn_WC+fixtures&cc=5901

According to ESPN's website, all games will be telecast on one of the ESPN networks or ABC (weekend and finals games I would imagine).

The US got the shaft in the group drawings, but the final four is not that much out of reach as their are rated the #4/5 best team in the world.

In FIFA rating, maybe but no one places a lot of weight on the FIFA rate. USA is probably closer to 10th on the global level (8-12 range).

Regardless of US, there are enough other teams showing enough promise to make this a really good World Cup.

And I've been told to go to Currents for the games.

Gistok,

The game you are referring to (I think) was Liverpool (England) against Juventus (Italy) in a European Cup Final in Hessel(sp?). I think 1984? England teams were banned for some ten years from European competition, as it was deemed the Liverpool fans were the ones who took the taunting crap too far resulting in a stampede.

Here we go - Kick off tomorrow. Deutschland vs. Costa Rica. Goliath vs. David. Imagine the scandal if the 'krauts lost that one. Not likely.

The other day a commentator humoursly noted that another reason the world hates the USA is that we are indifferent to soccer, er football, and if we won they would hate us even more.

Soccer (il calcio) is almost always on TV at the various coffee shops and bars on Via Italia in Windsor. That would be the place to see an Italy match in the World Cup.

Lowell--- Those who wear socks are whimps. Sans socks means freedom.
What has not received a lot of publicity on the World Cup is/ are the number of prostitutes that literally flow in to a host European city when they have a World Cup in their back yard. And Germany is no exception. It might get a mention in the weeks ahead. Stay tuned.

DOWN IN BRAZIL

Michael Franks

Down in Brazil
It takes a day to walk a mile
Time just stands still
And when the people you meet
Look at you, they smile
They still believe in style
They sooth you with their summers
Till you really know you're
Down in old Brazil
You can tell you're down in old Brazil

Down in Brazil
They never heard of win or lose
If you can't feel
That all those cafe ole girls
In high heel shoes
Will really cure your blues
It seems they all just aim to please
Those women sway like wind
In the banana trees
Then you know you're
Down in old Brazil

-Instrumental Interlude-

Down in Brazil
They know a million ways to play
You start to feel
And when you're happy
It's the same as when you pray
You think you'll get away
Then you know you never will
Not when you've been
Down in old Brazil
Not when you are down in old Brazil

The US got really lucky today...an Own Goal courtesy of the Italians, thanks guys...
We have some good players but as a team we are not seasoned enough. And we play Ghana next...those guys looked good against the Czechs...
OK, my English wife disagrees, she thinks the US did really well with 9 men on the pitch...we did withstand repeated attacks to hold on. And we did have a goal disallowed.
