don; it looks to be about 4 floors above the roof of the garage right now. it had seemed to be moving at a snails pace, but in the past few weeks the pace has picked up a bit...

Thanks RSA. That explains why no one has posted pictures recently - it wouldn't be that impressive yet. Thought it might be over 20 floors by now.

After the FSC meeting yesterday at the Anchor Bar, I decided to take the Chrysler Fwy. home, starting at Jefferson. I was really impressed by the tall vertical marquee that the Greektown Casino parking structure had on the freeway side. It was very colorful and attractive.

I wish more nice vertical marquees were used by both the casinos and the restored theatres, both downtown and midtown. It really is nice to view vertical marquees from a distance. Among the theatres only the Fox and Gem have anthing worth viewing.

The tallest vertical theatre marquee of all time was that of the Michigan Theatre (yes even larger than that at the Fox). It used to rise a full 10 stories next to its' great arched window. It was taken down in the 1950's.

I totally agree, I've always wondered how the area residents would feel about making streetscape improvements to Lafayette Ave, from maybe Chene to bagley. It already has and pedestrian island and on-street parking. A great start would be widening the sidewalk and installing lower street-lights that make pedestrian more visible. It gets pretty dark around there at night for walkers. A couple of years back, a local judge was hit and killed crossing the street.

I live in Lafayette Park and walk to greektown and other downtown destinations quite regularly. From my apartment it is just a 5 minute walk to Greektown and Eastern Market, 10 to Campus Martius or the riverwalk. In the warmer months there is a steady stream of people that make the walk to various places.

This neighborhood is loaded with a diverse group of people of all ages, race, and personal interests. I would not mind making changes to improve the area, but not if it takes away from the huge amounts of greenery, or affect the social fabric of the neighborhood. I'm all about progress and improvement, but not if it has any negative potential to a truly great part of our city.

Investor bets on Greektown: Bloomfield Township exec buys 22% of Detroit casino

This is the best news I've heard about Greektown Casino in a long time. Hopefully, he'll help the majority owners realize that they need to spend money to make money. I found the last paragraph to be particularly interesting.

39 would put it significantly taller than the BCBS building across from it..

I believe we will be taller than BCBS, but I'm not sure how tall the BCBS actually is......
The sign has been here for about a week.....supports were put up incorrectly on the Garage, waiting for parts......

According to Emporis.com BCBS had a height of 318 ft above the ground (not counting the sunken plaza inside). So looks like the hotel will be close to 30 ft taller than BCBS.

If Greektown was smart they would have put a pool/park/garden on top of the parking ramp, or at least something to serve their guests.

Don do you have a pic of the tower? I know you had agreements with MGM and MC that said you had to wait 3 months to post them on your site, or something to that effect, but I couldn't remember if that applied to Greektown too.

Yeah, thanks Don. That angle really makes me consider the possibility of the two churches teaming up to build a small paraking garage in the middle of their block, and turn the street-facing surface lots into development parcels.

Oh wait, there's 12 stories of parking next door, that might be overkill.

Gambling_man, do the churches each own their respective parking lots?

If they do, they could make good $ selling them to developers down the road, retaining small parking lots or alleys next to their buildings for handicapped parking, and letting everyone else park in the abundant nearby garages.

I know St. Mary's church owns their lot and leases it to a separate company. That company charges parking fees during the times the lot is not used for church services.

Okay thanks. I knew about the management company selling the spots, but I wasn't sure if it was owned by the church. Good to know.

Both lots are owned by the respective churches. But you are smoking some good weed if you think those lots will ever be sold to any developer for any amount of money in your lifetime.

I didn't read the sunday Freep, but someone who did mentioned that Tom Celani (former part owner of MotorCity Casino with Marion Ilitch) has purchased 20% of Greektown Casino from the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

Any other details?

Paging Gambling Man again. I commented previously about the lack of performance venues at the other 2 casinos. I noticed that Greektown will have an 1100 seat theater. Will this be a true theater with tiered seating or just another ballroom like the MGM? Any idea of acts they are planning on booking?

Sorry 401........Our theatre may well seat more than that....the balcony area will be slanted, but the main floor will be flat.....We will at least have acts, unlike MGM who has had ,I believe, a grand total of two acts so far. Motor Citys venue isn't done yet.

Two interesting facts, (for those of you who care), but the hotel, at 30 stories was up to about 21 at this point.....the hotel will end up taller than the very top of the crane you see in these pictures.....the second to last picture shows the casino built out over Lafayette (looking west), plus the start of the two story concert room (feature venue)......not all of the steel is up yet, but it is coming.....

I am a relatively new to this site, but I will start posting some pictures as the construction runs its course... I work in the Ren Cen, and my window directly faces the hotel construction...I look out the window everyday to see when they will finish putting those windows on.
