I think the dry wood chips soaked up alot of the water. Hardly any flooding in the garden.

Boy howdy do I have the canning stuff, too. Got cases of jars and lids and all that stuff from my mother after she passed.

We're going to have to start buying the heck out of that stuff, it is starting to get a wee bit rare, from what I've heard.

Cheers!

I have to say my garden was a bust. Ive harvested some very nice sunflowers and the heads are almost dry right now. I got a few tomatoes but nothing really got ripe on the vine. Cucs did okay but really only about a dozen to speak of. Melons went no where, corn either as the soil just didnt have what they needed. Im moving to the West side soon so my second try at being an urban farmer should be a little bit better. Ive got a lot of vacant land where Im going so Im going to do my best to get something going. I have to say, the pricker
bushes just outran me, I couldn't keep up.

Still need to get over to Cubs and finish a stack o rock before it gets too cold. Wish I had something to can or pickle besides my brain this fall.

and all them spices too.
Cub, better yet i,ll drag"son in law"over to you you tell him about the collards.
Res, aint forgot about you. hope to have the spring fixed on the truck this weekend, then i can haul stuff better.

Django and all: I have a recipe for green tomato mincemeat that is great. Make a little or make a lot. I usually made one-half the recipe.
1 peck green tomatoes chopped (16 pts.)
3 lbs. brown sugar
2 lb. raisins
1 C. suet
2 T salt
2 tsp. gr. cinnamon
1/2 C. water
1 tsp gr. cloves
2 tsp. nutmeg
Grated rind of 1 orange
3 C. chop apples
3 lemons(pulp & juice) or 1/3 C. vinegar

Chop tomatoes and sprinkle with salt. Allow to stand for one hour. DIscard juice. Cover with cold water and boil for 5 min. Drain, add suet, and 1/2 C.water, simmer 20 min. Stir in sugar & boil until dissolved. Add other ingredients and boil rapidly until thick about 20 min. Pack into clean hot jars and seal or stick in a pie crust.

Or here's a Green Tomato Pie recipe ( smaller)

Cook 1 C. sugar with a 1 1/2 C. water until dissolved. Add 1 1/2 lbs. sliced green tomatoes
(6 small ones) and cook 5 min. Add rind of 1 grated lemon, 3/4 tsp cinnamon and cook until tomatoes are transparent. Add 1/2 C. raisins, cook 2 or 3 min. Pour into partly baked pastry shell ( to avoid sogginess) and cover with lattice and bake at 375 d.

Hello all. Just found out today that the garden was awarded a hoop house from The Greening of Detroit. I can extend the growing season. I plan on planting some spinach, some more lettuce and some all greens mix. This also means I can start planting a little earlier.

Django no problem. I also have a couple low tunnels that I will be putting over a couple raised beds so we should have plenty of room.

I gotta get down to the garden, I need to get a sign about the collard greens so the "son in law"can pick them. The Georgia St garden is looking good and the raised bed deal has got me planning for next year.

I went down to Cub's garden yesterday and it is quite impressive! If you haven't gone, you should check it out. He's got a great thing going over there. With Cub's vision, we can all expect more exciting things in the community.

Just got to say, they built a LARGE screen for watching tv/videos/etc and it was so cool to sit out there watching a movie, by a bonfire in the middle of a big garden. We need more things like this in our communities to bring people together. Great job Cub! Can't wait til the next movie night. I'll bring popcorn this time. ;)

Saw this piece on ABCNews and thought of all of our urban farmers/gardeners on the forum. This is quite amazing what is going on in Milwaukee. Hope you enjoy it.
