Detroit Rises

Sometimes the challenges of our city make it difficult to overlook the frequent steady positive events happening in the meantime. Forward movement more often takes place in quiet little steps...

Detroit Rises

...like adorning a humble upper Southwest home with marigolds...

Detroit Rises

...or building new neighborhood church,

Detroit Rises

...or a new habitat for humanity home.

Detroit Rises

The saving of the old and beautiful progresses amid skepticism, sometime founded, but more often not...

Detroit Rises

...like the restoration of the majestic Galston on Michigan, an long abandoned structure, nearly restored a year ago, only to be ravaged and seemingly hopelessly gutted by fire, then patiently restored again. Possibly no project better fits the City of Detroit Motto Speramus meliora; resurget cineribus ("We hope for better things, it will rise from the ashes")

Detroit Rises

Forward movement is also taking place in giant steps as seen in the progress of Greektown Casino's new hotel and skywalk...

Detroit Rises

...new sidewalks before the rising Motorcity casino...

Detroit Rises

..a resplendent MGM Casino...

Detroit Rises

...a restored Howard Street Power station...

Detroit Rises

...progress on the Dequindre Cut Parkway...

Detroit Rises

...and the restoration of the mighty Fort Shelby Hotel.

So, was the first shot one of Livernois Yard off Central by any chance? That pile of old ties looks familiar...

Correct LY, your namesake shot from the Central Ave. crossing.

Mackinaw, those houses are behind the Bohemian Hall aka the Bohouse, north of Michigan ca. 24th street.

That Amtrak ROW on the Michigan Line behind the ties dates back to 1836 or 1837--Detroit to Dearborn and a bit later to Ypsilanti.

Yes, Thank you!! As a Detroiter living out of town I read but sometimes can't see all the good things going on. Please keep it coming. I can show my friends here in North Carolina that not only is the South rising again but so is Detroit!!

Love the pictures. What is odd is that I did not see any people in any of them. Were they taken at an unusual time of day??? I mean, even the Dequindre Cut had no people working. Kind of scary actually.

Great pics Lowell. That Howard Street sub-station looks awesome, I love the deco design. Reminds me of the entrance to MIB headquarters in Men In Black.

Great Post Lowell!!
Just came from the Grand Opening of the Ladybug Gallery at the newly restored Whitdel Building from Southwest Solutions. Just another example of amazing locii of meaningful redevelopment. I encourage everyone to swing by Mexicantown and check out the jawdropping artwork on display as well as the historic character of the building meticulously restored. Its on Hubbard, just off Grand Blvd. W.

Thanks again Lowell!!

I oughta post some links from flickr on this, or give the URLs 2 some blogs I posted on myspace aobut this. This appears to be a very interesting thread.

BTW, is there anyone familiar with the Exposure Detroit project? There's a group of local photographers who have their work in a gallery at a coffee shop in Royal Oak. Just curious.

"they just gonna sit abandoned?"

That's a good question. I really hope not. Maybe Magic Johnson can actually open his theatre in there are they can make it into a recreational Commercial Establishment (Family Resort?)

if the casino has no plans for the structures they really should have to pay for the demolition of those ugly useless buildings.

my lack of imagination cannot really think of anything that would work there.

Only MGM is leaving the old building. And you all need to relax. I am sure someone will come in and pick up the building eventually. It is a rather high quality building. Plus, it has only been 3 weeks since it first opened.

deluxe complex with bowling, pool, video games like a dave n busters. they will push this development to prove they are not a typical money sucking magnet like most casinos.

How refreshing, Lowell! Especially seeing the Galston on Michigan. And even the Dequindre Cut. I guarantee the D Cut will be featured in a future issue of Planning Magazine! :-)

I remember reading that the old MGM is going to be used for employee training. Not sure if that is permanent.
