Unfortunately, I am out of town for this year's annual mardi gras mimicing, boobs-out, boat and booze bash. The weather looks like it'll totally cooperate; should be a great day.

Anyone planning to make it to Gull Island tomorrow? I wish I could join ya!

To bad the island gets destroyed ,I went two years ago after the party and it was a total disaster area! I have been there 3 years ago and it was fun but not as much as people make it out to be. Sure you will see plenty of skin....but it turns into an animal house by the mid afternoon....all of that skin attracts a LOT of sausage! The island used to be a good place to go when you knew it wasnt a sewage collector a week out of the year.

Not being a boater, I never really knew about this... but from the looks of things, I'd say this is like Mardi Gras on the water.

Hey, at least it's not the Dream Cruise, it's out on the water, away from the surface streets.

It's amazing how many can. Especially with all the histrionics around here about gas prices and a bad economy.

To add to the comment about the economy and the boat ownership...I ask myself about this bad economy when sitting in traffic in a far flung area like 26 Mile Rd. where it is backed up and everyone is sitting in a new car with only one person in it. It is not just there at rush hour all of our roads are packed with nice cars with one person in each car mostly. Yet all I hear is the doom and gloom of the economy and how nobody can bear the TERRIBLE GAS PRICES!!!!!!!! yet we all drive around one person per car....

I couldn't go this year , been 5 straight years, each getting larger.. but last year I got a really bad staff infection in my leg, that damn near killed me, 7 days icu, 4 weeks in the hospital.. NO way Am i getting in that cess pool this year.. but it was
a lot of fun. All I can say is if you get in that water you better wash off good after and don't go in with any open cuts ! thats my public safety announcement, take it for what its worth. boat safe.

There's an interesting history to that. Technically Gull Island is under the jurisdiction of the Army but they can't (and don't want to) police civilians.

Anyone know any more about that?

I believe the island itself is under the jurisdiction of the Army Corps of Engineers. The waters surrounding it is the jurisdiction of the county marine patrol and State of MI.

To answer Lilpup's previous ?, the county just does not have the marine patrol presence to prevent it. So they just allow it and go for the easy tickets.

Well it was an absolute blast! I did see a few scuffles, but that really can't be helped when there are 1000's of people in a limited space with unlimited alcohol. Overall nothing serious and nothing the bystanders couldn't break up. I did take lots of pictures, unfortunately I won't be posted any of them here =)...

As for the trash issue, for the past few years there has been a great group of clean up volunteers out after the weekend is over. I was there after last year's JobbieNooner and other than some knocked over grass you would never be able to tell there were 5000+ people there the weekend before.

After this weekend, boaters may want to avoid Gull Island
quote:

Tom Cleaver, founder of the We Are Here Foundation in St. Clair Shores, said the group cannot afford the cost of cleanup and safety precautions, which last year included paying someone to maintain a safety lane in Lake St. Clair that allowed emergency personnel to reach the island.

I love how so many so-called enlightened forum members trumpit how accepting, and encouraging of diversity they are, yet, they have no problem calling a bunch of people just having a good time "white trash." Don't get me wrong, jobbie nooner is not my thing, but why the hell do we accept the double standard?

In 1938 my Dad (age 10) would take his row boat from New Baltimore to Gull Island for the day. He drank from the lake and fished until dark. One day, a stranger in a sea plane landed and offered to take my Dad for a ride, he said it was a day he would never forget. Times change.

Who on this forum, or at least this thread, has ever declared themselves "enlightened", and what the hell does diversity have to do with a drunken pool party?

You want diversity? Fine. There was a diversity of white trash at the party: fat white trash, female white trash, poor white trash, naked white trash, dirty white trash, etc. You can have a good time and still be white trash.

my point is that calling someone "white trash" is no different than calling someone a "beaner" or the "n" word. why do you think it's ok to do that?

so many people on here think that because they live in the city they are so much more socially aware, more intelligent, more cultured, more open-minded, etc. etc.. if you're so open minded, why are you stereotyping a whole group of people you probably know nothing about?

it's ok to make fun of the white, fat, GED holding, nascar fans from chesterfield township, but someone on here makes a comment about being annoyed by a homeless beggar downtown and everyone is up in arms. give me a break. you're no better than those you mock.

fine, jfried-- i think we can make it a little simpler (and less offensive): the people who attend things like jobbie nooner are for the most part straight up trash. we don't need "white" as the qualifier because the color doesn't matter.

i'm all about having some (lots) of drinks and having fun-- but when it involves stupid drunk chicks getting naked and gross drunk men ogling them, no thanks. no wonder there are fights- it's a bunch of meatheads.

and you know what, if they weren't drunk idiots they wouldn't be doing things like leaving behind piles of feces and a bunches of garbage. nice people know how to clean up after themselves, drunk or not.

^^^ Like those on Belle Isle every summer weekend? I saw more fights in 3 hours there last summer than my entire day on Gull Island. It was also trashed beyond belief with piles of garbage everywhere. I guess that must mean that the "Majority" of the people using Belle Isle are "Filthy Trash". Or should I use another term that mentions their race as well???

if your only impression of jobbie nooner is what you see on tv or heard on the radio then you truly have no clue, i've been for the past 7-8 years and have not experienced any of the problems or trouble mentioned in the reports

sorry, if hanging out in the sun, drinking beer, and looking at hot women in bikinis is considered white trash activities, i'll take it everytime vs. a day being cultured at the DIA or opera house....call me kid rock......

btw, a large group of boaters is going to be on the island again this saturday (june 30) for a massive clean-up project, this is due to the fact that the current leasee of the island, tom cleaver and the "we are here foundation" has washed its hands of responsibility of cleaning the island, despite supposedly spending close to $3500 to clean it last year (i think the boaters will spend close to $100 in garbage bags, not sure where his $3500 figure comes from).....

im sure most of the people that were at the party WONT show up to help clean, but there is a large contingent of responsible partiers/boaters that will....

i've never been to harley-fest so i won't comment on what happens there, but from reports i've heard, it's not an afternoon at church......

You guys like to call this white trash??

Citylover, is this the same type of white trash drunkfest that permeates campus life around your beloved Ann Arbor? Or (with such high admission standards & tuition rates) would you call them "upper white trash"?

Lordy, it's as though some of you never had a life as teenagers or 20somethings...

Well the place does look like it consists of many East side sports bar transplants, but whatever.

The eye candy would be the only reason I'd even be slighty interested in going. The thing is alot of those guys seem like fing tools. They can have the chick that still thinks it's 1985. I'd probably find myself jockeying for position with some dude that thinks he's Billy Ray Cyrus circa 1990. Not worth it. Regardless, let the people have fun as long as they don't fuck things up beyond repair.

I went a couple times because my band was playing. I found if you just avoid the swarms of mooks holding video cameras over their heads (oooo, there's a drunk skank with low self-esteem in there somewhere!) it CAN be bearable. You gotta have a decent boat, or access to one, and lots of booze, food, water and sunscreen. Still, I'd say 75% of the people there are NOT the kind of folks I'd choose to hang with.
