I guess the lighter green must mean "imaginary riverwalk" because rivard and tri-centennial are not connected at all so far. We all had to take a jolly stroll down Atwater in order to see the Boblo Boat.

The area is quite peaceful. That's why my friend was holding bible studies over there. To his dismay two freaks thought so too, and where F@#%ing right on a table one morning. Didn't even stop when he saw them. How often are the cops patrolling down there any way?

I can not wait until they build the @twater Lofts and Chene West and East so that the Riverwalk can be nonstop.

Dang, Romanized, nice way to kill the atmosphere, ain't it?

I understand that the walkway will be 24-7, and it will extend from Belle Isle to the Ambassador Bridge (which explains why Jefferson was closed off-for repairs I'm ASSuming) But once they connect the west side of Belle Isle to Mt. Elliot Park, as well as parts of Chene/TriCentennial Park, It'll be ready. I'm just going by hearsay.

During future River Days, it would be great to see temporary ferry access from Windsor to Detroit (although, customs could prove a problem), as well as temporary ferry service from Downriver and the Pointes.

I am sure temporary service would be expensive, but for someone living near an area served by such temporary service, it would definitely be an event to mark on one's calendar!

The light green means temporary. If you walked down Atwater to Tricentennial then you were following the light green pathway shown on the map.

Upinottawa, that's interesting. For some time I've thought of the possibility of a permanent high speed commuter ferry linking the cities that hug the shore from Anchor Bay to Grosse Ile/Trenton. And possibly Windsor but then there's the customs issues.

Found this youtube about the Detroit riverfront and Riverwalk. Apologies in advance if this is a repeat for some of you.

A brief update: The DNR recently approved and signed a contract with the city for Phase II of Tricentennial State Park. That contract now needs City Council's approval.

Had the contract been worked out sooner, they wanted to break ground this fall. I'll ask if there is a new rough time line. Of course all bets are off since the DNR might be shutting down on October 1st.

The property between the @twater and the river will be started with a new waterway/creek, riverwalk connection, and some landscaping. Phase III is really the biggest phase in my eyes because it takes the Phase II project to the next level and completes the State Park from Atwater to the river. The 4th and 5th phases are for north of Atwater.

Phase II is the property from Rivard Plaza to the large grassy mound and between Atwater/@water and the river. It will be a restored wetlands with separate Riverwalk paths for cycling and walking.

I don't know very much about this project, but how are they going to "make" a creek? Sounds strange.

An existing storm drain will be the creek's source. For all I know, that drain may have once been a creek.

The Latest Word
The design work for phase II of the state park is 90% complete. The DNR expects construction to begin next June. This involves extending the Riverwalk upstream from the Rivard Plaza along the river then up to Atwater near the big grassy knoll.

The DNR is working with the Watermark developers to continue the Riverwalk along the river from where the Boblo Boat is moored.

Progress is also being made on the connector trail between the Dequindre Cut and the state park. I do believe that connector is on city-owned property.

As noted in another thread, the nearby Globe Building received a brownfield tax credit. The DNR is hoping to put their visitor center within the building.

"I do believe that connector is on city-owned property."

The city does own huge swaths of land throughout that area as most of it was gathered up for the casinos...

Cool! Thanks for the DNR link. The only thing I don't really like about the plan is the rerouting of Atwater. Oh well.

May sound corney, but I've always dreamed of having a norther tree mini-forest along the river. I sure hope that plan gets implimented successfully. I also really like the soft engineering and how it creates an island!

The last I knew, Atwater was not going to be rerouted. That's a change from earlier plans.

Atwater was just repaved from Strohs River Place to Rivard. It would be pretty stupid to do that and then reroute the street. Although, it is Detroit that we're talking about...

To clarify, the Detroit 300 pavers are in front of the Gateway to Freedom Underground Railroad Monument on the edge of Hart Plaza. The River Walk pavers are in Rivard Plaza near the Carousel.

You're welcome, L_in_the_d! Our family bought several pavers to celebrate Detroit 300 and our family's presence in Detroit since the beginning. I check out those pavers every time I'm at the riverfront just to see if they are clean and otherwise undamaged.

An update from John Kerr at the Port Authority on Phase II of Centennial State Park:

Heard back from the State Park project managers ... it sounds like they will attempt to start around June of this year. Probably will conclude with some final cleanup and landscaping in the Spring of 2009. Hopefully, a lot of activity scheduled for this Summer!
