Well we knew it'd only be awhile before some City Council members decided to act a fool. The trash fee has been rejected for a fourth time despite the fact that two members Kenyetta and Reeves voted for budget. If not passed we're looking a 600 layoffs including more police and fire
quote:The session Friday was marked by intense lobbying by council members and the mayor's staff to sway Reeves, who was considered the swing vote. At one point, Conyers led Reeves out of council chambers by the hand to discuss the ordinance. At another point, Watson and Collins cornered her in the hallway to keep her from changing her vote.

However, they have been unable to get a majority of council to even agree on holding a hearing. Council members Barbara Rose Collins, Martha Reeves, Kwame Kenyatta, JoAnn Watson and Brenda Jones have refused to vote on the hearing.

I'm sorry but is anyone shocked that elected officials are lobbying for votes to their side. Especially by lobbying/coercing the member deemed most pliant? I don't get why this is news. Yes, the vote is news but a lot of the items the local papers seem to be reporting lately seem to be geared toward the suburbanite "tsk, tsking" the "stupid" folks in charge of the city. "led her by the hand" We get it. She's dumb...whatever. |

yes, clearly it's the media's fault for portraying the council as "stupid". (Message edited by hamtramike on June 14, 2006) |

I'm with you Hamtramike, given the bad quality of the media in general, they don't have the ability or creativity to write this stuff. Nope our "leaders" are idiots of thier own making. |

It's not like we help ourselves they knew the budget was balanced on the fee. Voting against it now I say that qualifies as stupid (Message edited by eric on June 14, 2006) |

I'm not trying to stick up for the Council by any means. However, I take offense when a writer uses the phrase "led by the hand" in a news article knowing that the connotation will be negative. I also laugh because shit like this happens every day on the 13th floor but the only time folks bitch and moan is when it's in the papers. |

This is ridiculous. This is called politics, people. You should see how heated the budget debate got here in my little of Lansing. I'm really starting to see those that are seriously out for the council. It completely ruins your credibility when they actually do something unbecoming of an elected official. Jeeze. Piss-poor journalism, and those looking for blood in the water where it hasn't been spilled. These gadflies really help make the socio-economic environment in the metro so volatile and fragile. I'm getting sick of it. People, this is called political posturing, and I'd be scared if they weren't doing this. But, God knows if they weren't then people would harp on them for being "lazy." Concerning about the $300.00 fee for garage and bulk trash pick up in which the city CLOWNSIL rejected. Most Detroiters may breath a sigh relief. Sorry KING KWAME looks like the party is finally over. |

I have to disagree with you Ms. Rosa to me this is news. When two CC members vote yes for a budget knowing that a change in a city ordinance will have to happen then vote no to change the ordinance. I call that stupid not picking on the CC. It is very news worthy because now the budget has a 43 mil hole in it. I think you and Lmich are in denial if you don’t think that is news worthy. If I was KK I would just layoff 600 workers (not police and fire) and I would use Kenyetta and Reeves letter head to do it. I would also point out that they are the reason they don’t have a job. |

The fact that Kenyatta and Reeves voted for the budget but not for this is newsworthy but if I had a penny for everytime the Council hadn't done something they were supposed to and everything ended up turning out okay I'd have lots o' pennies. |

What I was trying to infer by that is that this political posturing will be over soon. They'll vote again soon and it'll be long forgotten. |

Hey: What's newsworthy is the fact that as Detroiters, we'll soon be required to pay an additional $8.00 on our water bills to help cover the costs of water bills that go unpaid by Detroit residents that don't pay their bills. Now that really gets me pissed off! I know that there are lots of Detroit residents that do not pay their water bills just like they don't pay electric bills. Many are stealing water every day. Responsible water paying customers should NOT have to be subjected to this! The council nor any Detroit lawmakers in Lansing talk about this at all and are doing nothing about it either! It's bullshit. |

In the title of this thread, there should be no apostrophe in "...back to its old self." No apostrophe should be in "its" for possesive use. Examples: its old self, its lobby, its shoreline. Put an apostrophe in only when you are contracting "it is." Examples: it's raining, it's difficult, it's good. I've seen so many examples of "it's" confusion on this board, and in roughly 10 years of using the Internet, that I finally had to say something. Come on, people. Anybody who passed 8th grade English should know about this stuff! Fix it and your posts will look better. More importantly, your writing will be taken more seriously. |

Lmichigan-- I know that, but after years of seeing that mistake I finally snapped and had to say something. I also noticed that I didn't spell "possessive" correctly in my post above. So I'm not perfect, either. |

They actually haven't approved the fee yet. All they've done is approve to have it introduced. We will now get public heraings on the measure with the actual voting on the measure coming at a later date. The public hearings should be great entertainment. |
