Not because of the Red Wings of course...

If the Hurricanes win tonight, the Stanley Cup would be on display in downtown Detroit

Owner Peter Karmanos would display the pro hockey trophy at Compuware headquarters

FREE PRESS BUSINESS COLUMNIST

Peter Karmanos Jr., the nervous and superstitious owner of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, talked warily in an interview today about his hockey club’s chances of winning the Stanley Cup in Raleigh, N.C. tonight.

The Hurricanes lead the best-of-seven series 3 games to 1 over the Edmonton Oilers.

“If we win it,” Karmanos told me, “I would be more than happy to put the Cup right in the lobby (of his Compuware Corp. headquarters in downtown Detroit). We would ask people to remove all Red Wings paraphernalia before they view it, but we wouldn’t insist that they put Hurricanes stuff on.”

The Hurricanes lost to the Red Wings in the 2002 Stanley Cup finals.

Was Karmanos kidding about the Red Wings gear? Hard to tell, but we may find out soon.

To read the full interview with Karmanos, see Thursday’s Free Press.

OK lets figure the tally:

Football: Detroit Lions (William Ford), Buffalo Bills (Ralph Wilson)
Hockey: Red Wings (Ilitch), Hurricaces (Karmanos) Tampa Bay (Davidson)
Baseball: Tigers (Ilitch)
Basketball: Pistons (Davidson)

Am I missing any?

I know those are just the four mainstream sports Gistok, but why not add Davidson's Shock in there. They did just win the WNBA championship a couple years back. Also, getting off the big 4 again, what about Penske and autoracing.

Not Hall, its Dan Gilbert that owns the Cavs.

I wonder what the Carolina fans think of this. Assuming there are any Hockey fans down there, which judging by the coverage of the finals I'm guessing there isn't. I'm still hoping for Edmonton to pull it out.

Chitaku the fan noise on TV is completely artificial. The volume of the crowd is controlled by the sound engineer who mixes the broadcast and the placment of the microphones in the stadium.
