Can anyone tell if there is a camera shop in the city? All of the ones I know about are in the burs like Adray, Ritz, Woodward and Century.... The two Ritz location near me have closed in Oakland Mall and the Southfield and 12 mile location...

Is there shop in the city? School me

I hope that DRM's message wasn't lost amidst this clever banter. Detroit Camera in the Penobscot Building.

Wasn't Detroit Camera and Cadillac Luggage one in the same? It was my understanding they both closed up, if not, please confirm otherwise.

Your understanding is wrong. Detroit Camera used to share a space with Cadillac Luggage, but later moved into its own spot (on Fort Street, westernmost storefront of the Penobscot Building).

You're probably almost as close to Century as to downtown Detroit.. Maybe a little further to Century. What kind of lens are you seeking? Considered Ebay?

I can always buy online.. nothing like getting what u want when u want it and talking to the salesmen etc...

I'm shooting a Nikon D-SLR.. looking at some good glass for it... I'll check out the penobscot store if it is still there.

Check out COSTCO. They've got a great sale on Nikon D50 digital SLR cameras right now. They call it a Family Sports & Action Outfit, including:
-D50 Digital Body
-28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G
-70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G
-Rugged Ballastic Nylon Camera System Case
-SD Memory Card
-Long Life Rechargeable Li-ion Battery
-Nikon Camera Strap (It is excellent)
-Software
-Power and Recharger Cords
-Many more extras

All for $779 + Tax

Most other camera stores charge that much just for the body!

While not in Detroit, Adray's in Dearborn or Troy has received more of my dollars than I care to think about.

Alex at Detroit Camera is a great guy and quite knowledgeable about many facets of the industry. He's great at ordering specialized equipment or films.

If you're looking for used equipment, there's a great place on Ford Road near Venoy, J&? (the name escapes me at the moment) a very cool laid-back owner who would let me search through his dispays until I'd find some esoteric treasure that I suddenly had to have. I must have bought over 100 filters from him to fit the various lenses I own. (I shoot 16mm - 4x5, and I'm just learning digital)

Classic Camera on Mack in Grosse Pointe, usually has a good selection unless they have packed for a show somewhere. Not necessarily the best prices, but they saved my butt several times when one of my bodies camera went kaput just before a job (or in one case, I had to buy a new body in between the ceremony and the reception to finish the job, luckily I was in the Pointes).

$450 for a D50 body and 28-90mm lens at Ritz. (Just bought one as a back up last week)
$779 is a rip off - you can get a D70 with a lens online for that much.

i just bought a pentax dslr from adray in dearborn- it is probably closest to midtown (where i live). while i didn't get the best price those ppl behind the counter know their stuff- esp with accessories and such. they also steered me towards a more budget camera- which i always like b/c most salesmen seem to do the opposite...

Classic Camera is no more, they went out of business a year or two ago. CameraMart on Telegraph in Pontiac is a good place for digital equipment, Nikon F mount included, although it is a ride from Detroit.

So I went to Detroit Camera in the Penobscot during lunch.... waste of time actually.

it's actually Detroit Pen and Camera

They had like 10 camera bags, one lens that I could see, no cameras, and photo paper and a gang of pens... ahhh o well
