Father Gabriel Richard arrives in Detroit. Escaping the Reign of Terror in France, Father Gabriel Richard reached Detroit in time to organize relief for the town, which burned to the ground on June 11. Surveying the devastation, Richard was heard to say, "Speramus meliora; resurget cineribus." Translated, it meant "We hope for better things; it will arise from the ashes." It became Detroit's city motto. Richard served his adopted city as an educator, minister and politician until 1832 when he died after ministering to Detroiters who contracted cholera. The above photo of the motto of the City of Detroit is part of the artwork above the doorway at the beautiful old and closed Belle Isle Aquarium. Too bad the motto didn't work to the benefit of the Aquarium staying open. Maybe it will get a new lease on life. I heard some very rich and influential Detroiters discussing the Aquarium. They were talking about an endowment to keep it open in perpetuity without city funds. I wanted to get up and cheer but I was snooping in on their conversation at the DAC and didn’t think it was appropriate. I hope it was more than talk and something comes of it. Time will tell but I can always hope! Livedog2 |

Thanks for the info, and also the pic Livedog2... It is interesting to see how lavish the entrance portal is decorated, compared to the rest of the exterior of the Aquarium. That 1904 fancy facade can probably be described as "King Neptune Beaux Arts". |

I surely hope someone from the private sector will save the aquarium. It used to be one of the main reasons that I would visit the park. Good Ears Livedog...we will see what happens |

The aquarium is the first thing that ever attracted me to Belle Isle. Without it, I find it difficult to bother going there for more than an infrequent drive around the grounds. |

FOBIA is still working very hard to reopen the aquarium. There is still hope. One concern was always the small size, I think an expansion should be in order, that way Kilpatrick can have his big shiny new aquarium, and the old one can still be used. Hell the city spends more to keep up rotting Tiger Stadium than it ever took to run the little aquarium. |

Excellent point, Eastsidedog! I am still hopeful that someone, somewhere will come up with a plan to re-open the Belle Isle Aquarium. I think doing an add on to the existing Aquarium is a great idea. That way we could have the "old" Belle Isle Aquarium along with a new World Class Aquarium to rival the ones in New Orleans or Long Beach. Maybe the right people might get the idea and run with it -- we can hope! Hey Susanarosa more stolen pictures from detroitfunk. Like he’s the only person that has any pictures of the Belle Isle Aquarium! Come a little closer Susanarosa my sweet Absolon I have a kiss for you but you have to close your eyes first. Livedog2 |

As you can see in a comparison of the flag of the City of Detroit with the emblem and motto above the doorway to the Belle Isle Aquarium – they both have the same motto as spoken by Fr. Gabriel Richard translated meaning, "We hope for better things; it will arise from the ashes." I wonder if the motto appears anywhere at the Detroit Zoo and other Detroit sites, parks and facilities? I am so sad for Detroit. It has so much unreached potential. |
