I heard that there will be an announcement on the razing of Tiger Stadium sometime this month. Vacant for almost seven years. How long did Olympia Stadium stand before it came down?

Tiger Stadium should have come down within days of the last game played there in Sep 99. Hopefully, some tax generating private sector occupancy will be built there. When I lived in Corktown for ten years (1991-2001) I sometimes suggested that developement with a historic tie to the neighborhood would be the right choice, a mixed commercial-residential complex, possibly with commerical on the street level with condos on top with a small parcel of the playing field as a commons.

Hopefully, something more than a stripmall will go in there.

You guys, come on now. We need at least one dead body, one stolen burnt car and a "Vote for Martha Reeves for Detroit City Council" sign on the property.

I heard a parking garage was being placed there, with ground floor retail, and upper level luxury residential condos. Cheesecake factory, ESPNZone and House of Blues will all open in the location, which is to be used as a focal point for a light rail, mass transportation system serving the entire Southeast MI region.

Out back there will be a field for empty Hennesy bottles, trash, and Martha Reeves campaign signs.

honestly, a grassy broken-bottle-field is better than the city wasting hundreds of the tax payers dollars. It's a valuable site but tear that monster down. Sell it off and try to balance the budget. It would be nice to see a new convention center go there but the land is not big enough........maybe down the rivr over the railyards. Goodbye Tiger Stadium. We will miss you.313

Hopefully the New Olypmia Stadium will be built on the land, if Tiger Stadium meets its demise.

Olympia was vacated in 1979 and was torn down in 2006, so it stood vacant for seven years.

Tiger Stadium has also been vacant for seven years.

Come on, snap to it! Mayor Illitch wants a new stadium and he wants it now. Until he gets his way, that building will stew in its own rot.
