Hello fellow Detroit posters, I am new to the boards and just registered yesterday. I wanted to take time to introduce myself and tell you how happy I am to see that Detroit is on the rebound, at least from what I have been reading in recent weeks. I am a 17 year-old from Lexington, KY and I have read a lot of information and history on Detroit for quite some time and I love reading about it. I plan on moving to Detroit the first chance I get after finishing high school. But I certainly am very enlightened and glad to see that work is being done to improve the city and make it respectable once again. My entire family is from Chicago, Illinois and I get sick of hearing them boast about Chicago and look down upon "The Motor City". From the first time I read about Detroit and saw pictures of the city, I fell in love with it and vowed that I would one day reside there. I just wanted to let you all know how happy I am to be on here and I look forward to sharing my thoughts and opinions with you residents of Metro Detroit and look forward to hearing your insight on "The Motor City".

Thanks and God Bless,
Steve

I plan on majoring in sports journalism or broadcasting in college so I hope to cover the Pistons or Tigers as a sports writer or maybe even a radio or TV broadcaster locally.

Don't pay any attention Lex, they're just breakin' balls. Welcome.
There's always room for new, young, enthusiastic folks in this town. However, it may be tough to walk right in and get the sports anchor spot on the 11 o'clock news, Bernie & Don won't be giving those up anytime soon.
A old buddy of mine did the same, but to break into TV, he had to go to a small market, Alpena, MI. I've lost track of where he's at lately, but I think he's moved up to a slightly bigger market like GR or South Bend.
There's abundant sports radio in this town, and much of it needs an enema, so there are possibilities.

Vic's just relating the simple facts of life. Apparently, Lex has bought into a lot of BS that way too often school teachers (who possess few, if any, real-life experiences) tell their students: "You can do whatever you set out to do."

The print and broadcast industries are hardly in any need of workers as they barely have enough work to go around as it is. Besides, journalism has been a "basket-weaving" major in college for decades, and it pays near the bottom for college grads on account of the large number of grads in that area. The few gainfully employed are not going to stand by idly while some wide-eyed puppies take away their jobs.

"But I certainly am very enlightened and glad to see that work is being done to improve the city and make it respectable once again."

Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad that our city is finally starting to gain respect among 17 year olds living in Kentucky.

Detroit's had a hard time since the decline of the auto biz, but it's always been a respectable, honest, and hard working city. To me, THATS respect, not fancy exterior lighting on buildings downtown.

I agree 100 % Haydenth, I have been to Chicago many times and see all the things they have to offer and they flaunt it as soon as you hit the CBD. I have much more respect for a city like Detroit that has worked for all that they have and continue to work hard for the living that they have achieved. All of those fancy bells and whistles in Chicago are nice, but they don't mean a thing without the work that it takes to achieve that success, like Detroit has been doing. Thanks for the response. I love Detroit and hold it in high regards, much higher than New York, LA, and Chicago. I consider Detroit, Michigan a true "American" city with an American Dream that is still alive today!!! :-)

"I'm glad that our city is finally starting to gain respect among 17 year olds living in Kentucky."

At one time, they made up a significant chunk of Detroit's population growth. Maybe the renewed interest in Detroit among young Kentuckians is a sign that the city is coming back...

I sure hope so, I do know that many people in my classes at school seem to look down upon the Detroit as one big "hood" or "ghetto", but that just brings out their ignorance and lack of knowledge in the subject matter. I truly understand what this city is going through and I hope that when I get there, I can help in any way I can to assist in the reconstruction of The D!!! :-)

You're right, I have not yet visited Detroit, but I plan on going this summer sometime, but if not I will definitely visit next year on my spring break or during summmer. However, I keep close watch on news surrounding Detroit and the Metro Area and constantly search for all good news that helps the city in any way. But when I do make my way up to Detroit, I will definitely give everyone the heads up so maybe I can meet up with you all and share my insights and listen to your wisdom from living here for so long. Thanks very much!!! :-)

Spring break in detroit, who would have thought :-) you should get that " I vacation in Detroit" T- shirt those urban hipsters wear. Do you plan on going to school here in MI?

Word of advice on Detroit, you will see great beauty here in the good and the bad, but dont let your "love" for the city blind you of what is really going on.

Kova, I don't know "urban hipsters" who wear those shirts. The people that wear those shirts are the same ones that wear the "sorry we missed you" shirts.

Haydenth hits it right on the head.

Don't narrow yourself now- I absolutely guarantee that once you get to college you'll find many, many other things that strike your fancy in places you'd least expect to do so. I look at my interests and goals now and compare them to what they were this time two years ago, and everything is completely different.

That's the same advice I gave to MCM and his Deputy, and they seemed a little less responsive than I would have expected. Don't narrow your future to living in Detroit because you liked what you saw on a website. Go to college, be open to change, and don't be afraid to try new things.

I'm not some stupid poster who just goes around spreading BS, I actually have a life. He lives in a rural community about an hour away from the city. No one knows why he posts here - he contributes nothing and many suspect he's off his meds.

Welcome, Lex, and don't pay any attention to these old grumps!

Lot's of snarky people on this forum - not just this thread. As if snark were an ends, not a means. Pay no attention Lex. I was born and raised in Livonia and never got anywhere near the city till I was a senior in High School. I've lived all but 2 of the last 30 yaers in the city; I experience occasional frustration and disappointment with life in the city, but never seriously consider moving elswhere. I'm trying to be part of the solution.
Whether your career plans change or not, your enthusiasm and idealism are a breath of fresh air. Welcome to our community.

Oliverdouglas, Thanks very much for the kind words!! Good to find some good people. A lot of people down here in Lexington have their noses a bit out of joint! Don't know why, but I'm definitely looking for a change and I hope Detroit can be that change for me!! Thank you very much! :-)

welcome to the forum lex. ms. rsa originally hails from j-town, so i'm a little familiar with your neck of the woods :-)

a few pieces of advice/opinions:
-there a few people here that like to use the forum as a soapbox to posture. you'll quickly learn how to notice them and ignore it.
-coming from another field of sutdy that is fairly intense, opportunity limited, and low paying; just stick with it as long as you love it. don't expect a whole lot from it and it'll end up being its own reward. but if you expect money, fame, etc. (which it doesn't sound like you are) look elsewhere. it also doesn't hurt to keep your options open regardless.
-don't rule out schools in the city, there are many great ones: university of detroit mercy (has a very good english & journalism dept.), wayne state, etc.
-move right away. you'll enter into school with many people in the same boat at the same age. makes it much easier to get accustomed to things and make friends. also is much easier than transfering schools (credits, etc.) and environments.
-when you get here, join volunteer groups. preservation wayne, detroit synergy, etc. they will put you in touch with a lot of peopleand a lot of people that share your interest (detroit). also a great way to eventually make a lot of professional connections.

well, there's my $.02, hope it helps.

-RSA (RockStArchitect)

are you serious dog!? This is the account Lowell log me in with....I ain't got nutt'n to do with that!

What you should say is, more than likely 90 percent of the forums members have never lived in Detroit!

I have lived in many areas in Detroit, including Downtown, the Riverfront, New Center, Cass Corridor, Rosedale Park, and now in Southwest Detroit.

Hey kid! just to let you know, the 'real city' of Detroit is 90% BLACK! (oops) still comming?

Listen Super_d (as in "d" is for disco). We know you are as white as milk, love disco and fronting with a "posse". We know you live in some hick 'burg spinning Diana Ross with a hip hop slant to all of the grade 9's in your basement. Quit pretending!

Don't go there, Lex. It's a waste of time. Detroit is 90% black, but not 90% assholes. Ignore people like SuperD. I have lived in the city most of my adult life and occasionally encounter hostility; it's a problem throughout this region and has as much to do with Detroit's problems as the economy (chicken or egg). Nearly all my neighbors are black, but I've never for even a split second suspected that I was unwelcome. Green Acres is a great neighborhood!
The fact is that most Detroiters are good people (if, understandably, a little distrustful at first). Don't be too quick to assume ulterior motives, nor respond when people assume them of you. Move on.

Sure thing Mw2gs--I will use a reference from urbandictionary.com:
WIGGER--A male caucasion, usually born and raised in the suburbs that displays a strong desire to emulate African American Hip Hop culture and style through "Bling" fashion and generally accepted "thug life" guiding principles.

Lex....and what does your definition of WIGGER have to do with acting "black"? Are you saying you have a narrow view of black people? Better yet....in your mind black = nigger, and any white person who emulates = WIGGER? Do you feel as if you are a racist? Do we really need another person who thinks like this up here? I personally hope you keep your ass in KY.

It's funny that this downward spiral started with Vic and yet Vic is the only one who has really said anything of value to Lex here on this page. No one here understands or knows more about journalism in Detroit than Vic. He's the man even if he left MT for Crain. Guess he got tired of starving!

In a response to Super D, Lexdetroitman says:

"What are you, a wigger?...That's too bad you aren't comfortable with your own race and nationality you have to act black."

I didnt put these words into your mouth youngbuck. They came out on there own. Again....what do you mean when you say "act black"? And what does that have to do with WIGGER? If anyone else can help me understand this please feel free. Goat? I ask the same question when I hear a black person say another person acts white. WTF is that shit supposed to mean?

It's a vast and unfortunate geralization, but you know perfectly well what it means.

Steve aka Lex,

Welcome to the forum! I hope you don’t mind the new nickname. Though I read the forum topics daily, I’ve come out of posting retirement to welcome you, and to inform you that you’ve dethroned me from my reign as the youngest forum poster. I now feel as old as dirt…(just kidding) [I will enter my 20s next year.] Meanwhile, I’ve just completed my first-year at Michigan State University, where I am studying journalism and earth science. These fields of study will lead me to my career goal of broadcast (television) meteorology.

I greatly appreciate your enthusiasm and interest in the D. It’s an amazing city, but it is truly a tough city…a “real” city – not an artificial, sugarcoated cosmopolitan.

Nevertheless, the city is unique. Please be sure to inform us if/when you are headed to Detroit. This summer, I will informally tour some of my MSU friends through the city, and dispel the withstanding rumors and stereotypes. They actually believe that my street, “8 Mile,” is a haven for constant criminal activity.

In addition, I have included an editorial that I blogged online about the city just before the Super Bowl in February. I look forward to reading your contributions to the forum.

- Ron,
Young Detroiter

I love her vibe, she does it XL style

by Ronald Bowman

January 31st, 2006

It’s that time of the year again when sports columnists and other journalists tend to spew their poison. It’s that time of the year when they have a chance to complain about what are often imaginary problems.

Yeah, it’s the NFL’s championship game, and this year the big game, Super Bowl XL, will be played in downtown Detroit on February 5, 2006.
As Detroiters brace themselves for the likely journalistic attacks, allow me to explain my admiration for the Renaissance City. I love my hometown dearly. Detroit has been with me through the dark times and the bright moments. Likewise, I’ve been with Detroit through the harsh winters and the hot summers, the crime and the peace, and even the bright fireworks and the Great Blackout (of 2003).

Of course, it is easy for people to have pride for their own communities. However, there’s something different about Detroit. Is the Motor City the most transportation-friendly city? No. Is Motown the nation’s most attractive or most cosmopolitan city? No. Is Hockeytown crime-free? Of course not! There is no large city without crime. The crime problem is simply downplayed in the areas where the journalists and celebrities tend to reside.

While Lady Detroit, over 300 years old, may not look like some of the newer urban areas with population influxes, she has her own unrivaled style. Detroit will never be a Chicago, New York, or Los Angeles, but she will be uniquely Detroit. Why aspire to be like some other city when Detroit has her own special culture and vibe?

I love her vibe!

My first childhood international experience was visiting Windsor, Ontario, Canada, which is actually one mile due south of downtown Detroit. That’s the reason we call this region the “two nation destination.” For Detroiters, traveling to Canada is as casual as traveling to the nearby suburbs. Some of us don’t even consider Canada another country. Windsor, which will play a big role in the Super Bowl, is our sister city. The two lovely ladies, Windsor and Detroit, get along just fine. Furthermore, I’ve traveled to several European countries and to various cities across the United States, and none can substitute the vibe felt in Detroit.
Maybe I’ve fallen in love with the vibe that radiates from our many distinct pre-Depression skyscrapers, our love and production of music, our cars, our history, our museums, our sparkling Detroit River, our island park known as Belle Isle, our professional sports teams, our People Mover monorail train, or our ethnic enclaves including, two of our most popular, Greektown and Mexicantown. And that’s just to name a few.

Some of you have yet to feel that vibe.

A MSU friend of mine, a Saginaw, Michigan native, posed the question of why so many MSU Detroiters are exhilarated simply by the thought of Super Bowl XL. The answer:

Residents and nonresidents, alike, have pummeled Detroit. Detroit has already hit rock bottom, and she can’t fall any deeper. Now, it’s time for us to rise. Time for us to shine. And time for Detroiters to show the world that we never stopped being a world-class city. We’ve never needed the approval of others, because we love ourselves. We simply want to invite others to see why we love ourselves.

We want you to feel her vibe, XL style.

in re: to several posts ago:
I thought it was "write a check WITH YOUR MOUTH your ASS can't cash." I thought the "check writing" is done with the mouth, the cashing with the ass portion of the human body.

hmmmmm, could be wrong..........

It's "Don't let your mouth write a check your ass can't cash". That's been drilled into our heads many a time as the #3 hood rule of Detroit.

Lex, there are a lot of great and very smart folks on this forum.

There are also some folks who "have an ax to grind" with each other.

And there are the few who are just plain jerks and think that just because they can say what they want on the forum it makes them "seem" more important than they really are (i.e. "pin dicks").

Also you will find some racists on this forum, on both sides of the spectrum.

Wow! It seems that you got a smattering of each of the above on this one thread!

If you become a regular on this forum you will learn who to ignore.
