The fire department is dishing out tons of overtime and closing companies on a daily basis yet 59 firefighters including myself are still layed off? Does anyone have any info.

Mismanagement. It is like that in other departments as well. i am sorry to hear that. On your behalf I will email the city council and have a few of my justice fighters do so as well.

I know how important it is to have firefighters.

Jcdfde5,
I'm assuming you're aware of this site, but I'll post it anyways.

Jcdfde5 - Not to be a downer but this rationale may apply.

The city may believe that paying overtime when needed is more cost effective than paying for extra firefighters and the associated benefits. happens in many industries and allows more flexibility in the long run.

The difference, of course is that most businesses that do this are not fighting for people's lives and putting their own on the line. Morale suffering from working overtime while your peers are unemployed is much more dangerous to firefighters than to a typical employee. Same goes for potential cost from exhaustion.

firefighters are having an increase of duty related injuries due to the lack of staff and the response times are suffering.
