Here's and idea that I'm surprised didn't start in Detroit: a loft where you're car is on view at all times. http://www.metropolismag.com/c da/story.php?artid=2005 |

That is a great idea that way you can see your window being smashed or car stolen. |

All the people that I know would be interested in this, already own a big place in the suburbs with a 10 car pole barn. We don't have a severe enough land shortage to need something like this. |

what Ndavies said, plus with all the oil leaks that most 'hood rides have, it could get messy. |

The cost to have your car in your condo would be unbelievably expensive. As a point of reference, the ability to park cars in the basement of the Vinton building will cost over $25,000 per spot. That is just a simple 1 story car lift with the added common carbon monoxide and fire protection. We did research the ability to park cars on each floor. The price would have been 10 to 15 times the cost of putting cars in the basement. A better solution for urban car collectors are either high end rented or condo garage space. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12 873434/ |

Just in the past year I brainstormed this idea. Kinda freaky to see this on here now. To drive into an elevator with your car and have it deliver you to your floor and you park in a garage that is attached to your condo or apt. Pretty cool idea as I am their target age and gender. |

Sounds like a cool idea until the elevator goes down and you need to be somewhere. It has happened to me before, it is not a great way to start the morning. |

Yeah that would suck so bad for the elevator to break down.... There is no plan B.. unless you have another car on the ground or have a bus pass |

I have always wanted a loft like that. However my garage would be enclosed (all glass) and large enough to store/work on a few cars (4 or more). It would be great thing to be sitting on the couch; look over and see your car parked right next to you. |

the jetsons meets dan tanna ... One wonders why one would want their car blocking their view in a low to midrise condo tho ... Further, why would anyone want the side(!) of a building to become its parking lot? If pigsnout subdivisions are loathed shouldn't the higher density condo equivalent also be? Harder for the repo man to get to your car I guess .... which is a selling point ... |

And having the CarLoft powered by Detroit's city lighting would make it comparable to a having Ford Pinto with Firestone 500s. |

Yeah, but the FIRST time I changed the oil over the winter, I mis-placed the pan and got the mother of all Mobil One disasters in my living room. Romantic notions ended then. I wouldn't want to rely on technology to get my car in and out...I remember the power outage. There'd have to be multiple backups including a generator. Article mentioned a 'mobility guarantee' for residents in the case of an elevator malfunction...they pay the cab fare of anyone stuck. Somehow I don't think that would work well here, either. |

The city is full of unused Albert Kahn type factory buildings that we car guys store cars in, quietly. The Packard plant was the best of them all until the city-sanctioned "land grab" started. They evicted us all for the imminent demolition (Diamond distmantling waiting in the wings) of the building. That killed all of Cristini's income. I would love to see an investigative piece on what really went on there. The city has a "guard" sitting in a van 24/7 and more vandalisim has taken place under their watch then before. |

Yeah as opposed to building a seperate land eating parking deck. This is a wonderful way to ingegrate parking/residential. I don't see how you could compare it to a subdivion |

I wish I could park my car in my condo. Actually, I wish I could park my car in my condo, remove most of the furniture, and widen my interior doors to accommodate my car. That way I could drive my car around my condo and have room for friends to drive their cars in my condo. It would be perfect and I would never have to walk anywhere ever again. If only I could drive my car on the sidewalk…. I guess I will have to work on the toilet thing. Maybe if I upgrade to an R.V. and purchase a bungalow…. |

You are telling me ya wanna see cars parked up the outersides of, for example, a 10 story condo? In front of the windows?! Kinda like looking at a vertical traffic jam in a skyline. This IS the high density equivalent of the pigsnout subdivision. Stick the cars in the basement hidden from view, or if ya wanna for some reason park right next to your apt on the same floor then stick them in a ventilated central column hidden from the outside (can't imagine how that could be even remotely affordable tho ...) |

You must be younger, this is nothing new. I can remember 20 years ago friends having REAL lofts that we just drove on into or loaded the car on the freight elevator and then parked in the livingroom/garage. |

Not lazy. The elavators are needed due to space constraints. The cost of the option takes it a long way out of the just for the lazy stage. Not enough room for a regular garage, not enough room for a parking ramp. |

One of the ideas I had for the former Statler Hotel building was to go Condo... and to hollow out the interior "armpit" of the building and either put up a parking ramp for each floor, or a car elevator that would take the cars to the condo... but not on the exterior of the building. I envisioned it as each condo on all floors had a driveup 1 or 2 car attached garage on the inside of the building. That would avoid all those pigeons that probably love cars parked on exterior balconies!! However, as Skulker had pointed out, that "armpit" rusting hulk part of the Statler would have had to have been restored in order to get historic tax credits, thus ruining that idea... and in the end it helped killed any chances of restoration for that building! |

Okay - from a financial aspect - a car loft is insanely more expensive than any other type of parking. But damn is it cool. |
