I just finished an article about pool for a newspaper called the News and Advance in Lynchburg, VA. While doing research I found the world's greatest pool hall was once in Detroit. It was called the "Recreation". It featured 103 tables, 88 bowling lanes, 20 barber chairs, three manicuring stands, 14 cigar stands, a lunch counter on each floor, a restaurant that could seat 300, and an exhibition room with theater seating, that could accommodate 250 spectators. When I found this out, I couldn't imagine where this could possibily be in the city. Maybe on Park behind the Fox? I don't know. Does anyone know where "The Recreation" was? |
