WWJ radio is reporting that the Buhl Building on Griswold between Larned and Jefferson Avenues has been evacuated. Thus far, the reason is unknown, but Detroit Police are sweeping the building.

Don't they have real crime to deal with as opposed to cleaning floors at office buildings.

It's quite obvious, somebody wanted to start boozin early for the Tigers game, so they called in a threat so they'd get out of work early. You wouldn't have seen this in years past, as the Tigers were quite pathetic.

This one is actually quite creative, maybe good enough to make the Tigers comercial campaign promoting work excuses to take off for opening day next year.

Who's your Tiger?

DPD just gave the all clear.

Someone called in a threat saying a bomb had been placed on the 10th, 11th, or 12th floors.

Everyone is heading back inside.

I wish we would rethink our policy regarding bomb threats. Not only do we not evacuate, our policy is to conduct a search for the damn bomb.

On a more serious note, I recall standing outside the Guardian building one afternoon when the Buhl Bldg was in lockdown because a very unhappy client had entered the offices of former atty/ later judge Ed Bell and blew away a secretary, and injured several tenants as a fire-bombing was also envolved. One atty was confined to a wheel chair for the rest of his life.
That was one horrible afternoon. The year? I don't recall.Maybe early/mid 80's. Somewhere in there.
Police/fire trucks with their extension ladders all over the place. Just an awful, ugly incident on an otherwise sunny afternoon. I am sure someone will come up with a news report or a picture. But I will never forget it.

June 11, 1982 - Robert Harrington, armed with a shotgun, .22 pistol and a jar of gasoline went to an eighth-floor law office looking for an insurance settlement check. When he was turned away, he started shooting, then poured the gasoline on the floor and ignited it. The blaze forced some people to jump from windows several floors above the roof of a lower portion of the building. Firefighters stacked ladders to reach some trapped workers. Law student Eve August, 24, died; a man was left paralyzed; 30 others were wounded. Harrington was convicted of murder.

Thanks, Hysteria, for your research. I think the man left paralyzed was an atty in Bell's firm,Saunders Dorsey. I believe the law student who died was the daughter of Irv August who was a bancruptcy atty in the Guardian Building.

Llyn's latest works "Schizophrenic Thread-mongers" and "Schizophrenic Thread-mongers Strike Again" tell the story of a DetroitYes thread that veered from terror to laughter and back again...
