I thought it was a big Ad for the establishments, not an investigation.

I second that Eastside.
What I think is interesting is that just a few months ago there was talk about allowing bars to be open until 4am.
How are the bartenders going to get a chance to party after they get off with no afer hours clubs?

seriously... sometimes, no all the time, i feel that we still live in a puritanical state, what with our restrictions on "sin items" and deep connections between church and governemtn. what the hell gives? let customers and owners make up their own choice. bars should be allowed to close when they wish, and people should be able to buy booze whenever they please... ESPECIALLY ON SUNDAY...

Michigan's liquor laws all date back to the immediate post-prohibition era, c. 1933. Most of them are ridiculous in today's age.

Beer and liquor are sold/served 24/7 here in Vegas, and it's not a problem. I don't think we have any more a DUI problem than Michigan has.

all that this will lead too, with the strong arm tactics suggested in the column, will be more closed doors, more vacant structures, and new blind pigs springing up in new locations. Instead of fixing the issue, it seems they think it's more fitting to hit these bars so hard that they have to padlock and close them. So instead of not being an after hours spot, it's nothing... not a business at all. This sin't going to curb crime at all, it's just going to move somewhere else. We need to work on more pertinent issues like new license plates.

What I found ironic is that a quick internet search shows both writers residing right here in Detroit. More likely than not, it wasn't the first time they've been to afterhours joints.

Hmm, it seemed fitting I mention just getting home from my city's best after-hours, conveniently located 2 minutes by bike away from my place... early tonight! The cops shut it down after a few noise complaints. On the one hand, drunks talk too loudly right outside the front door, on the other hand, a lot of uptight people seem to buy condos in vibrant areas that are going to have some noise. If your hang-out is surrounded by gentrification, do everyone a favour and use your indoor voice outside an after hours joint.

Vice/Morality and regular cops got along like Cops and Internal Affairs. Vice/Morality loved to raid those places with plenty of cops and firefighters inside.

This article is incredibly stupid. For one thing NYC, and Chicago have afterhours bars.

While serving until 4 am is not exactly legal in Detroit, it's a relatively harmless practice that is, in a well... nearly legal, and yes, taxable way, drawing people into Detroit.

Tackling an afterhours gay bar is a pretty lame attempt at fixing Detroit's gun violence/ghetto culture problems.

Isn't there nearly unanimous support [among policymakers and Detroiters] for legal afterhours liquor licenses within the city and inner-ring suburbs?

Uhh, that is not the same thing. NY and Chicago allow sales until 4am. That is not afterhours.

Not all places in NYC and Chicago can serve until 4 am, but those cities make accomodations for clubs that would like to.

I didn't say it was the same thing.

I was saying it isn't a big deal, and that other cities legalize something that should already be legal. The problem is not late night bars.

[P.S. I just returned from Chicago yesterday, and some bars advertise "afterhours" hours.]

I've been to a few after hours places in Detroit and the level of "shady" and illegal activities was almost always higher than the surrounding establishments. I have no problem with extaending the serving time, but it will solve nothing.
The problem is changing closing time to 4am will just shift the rush to 2 hours later. The afterhours joints will then start getting busy at 4 instead of 2.. Which may put their patrons on the roads while everyone is on their way to work.

Actually, all places in NYC can serve till 4am. Clubs and the likes that wish to go past 4 must get permission from the State Liquor Authority. The only time of the week no alchol can be sold in the entire state is Sunday Morning from 4am to 12 noon.

But just like detroit, we have afterhours spots that will stay open till 6, 7, or 8......

Just watched Channel 4's undercover investigation of the bars, makes me sick! Don't these do-gooders have anything better to do? Some rapper gets capped, which he seems to have brought upon himself. Now they use "He was gunned down," in their story? Gunned down...are kidding me? Sounds like he got what he had coming and now the afterhours places are safer than before.

Don't fool yourself, if they crack down, it won't last long. Soon things will be back to normal and the police will be worrying about much more important things. The media has a nice way of fucking things up when there isn't much to report on.

As dumb as I think they are, they are illegal, no?

Take your chances, but don't bitch if you get caught or they get shut down. My opinion, if a business wants to take that risk, either change the law or close shop, even if it means the end of a viable business. Follow the law and you can stay.

Simple as that. No different than any other business operating illegally, inside the city or elsewhere.

I agree with those who say Michigans Liquor laws are archaic (going back to 1933!)...

For any of you who have ever been to Germany, they make some absolutely dynamite brandy chocolates. The ASBACH-URALT brand of German Cognac in bottle shaped chocolates and the more famous bean shaped chocolates are WONDERFUL!!!!

The Michigan Liquor Control Commission usually confiscates them from local gourmet stores that carry them (but not those that don't have a liquor license!). I order them (cool wather months) from a company in Florida that imports them from Germany. They are also available in Las Vegas.

But around Chrismas they are available in (unnamed) Michigan stores, and also available at Schwab's Deli in Windsor.

These are a "must try" specialty..... brandy truffles, brandy filled chocolate cherries, praline brandy chocolates, coffee flavored brandy chocolates, brandy filled easter eggs.... (damn, drooling on my keyboard again..)

Gistok, do you know of any after-hours places where they're serving brandy chocolates tonight? Also DOMK, haha.

I think Costco sells some variation of these beginning in August/September and thru the holidays, in the liquor section. I get 'em for my Mom each year - strictly for medicinal purposes:-)
