I had this discussion with a friend not that long ago but which out-of-town athlete is the most hated by Detroit sports fans. Who conjured or conjures up the most boos out of anyone in the Detroit sports scene? Claude Lemeiux? Michael Jordan? Brett Favre? Someone else?? |

Never Michael Jordan, being a great player does not denote a hated villian. There have been several sports villians over the years. Back in the day it was Lou Fontanato (till Gordie cleaned his clock), Baseball, was Tommy John for peening Dick McAuliffe with a pitch, Numerous "hacks" tormented the Pistons on the hardwood going after our finesse players with chops that would make Bruce Lee smile. Football? Carl Eller?, Dick Butkus? Maybe there are no villians in football because of the nature of the game. |

I can see lemeiux, but pacy you gotta be crazy to say Jordan doesnt fit in here. I know. I get it. Hes great, and guess what, I couldnt care less. Hes not just hated here because he is great. He's hated here because of the disrespectful way he talked about the Pistons along with the rest of the bulls. He couldnt beat us so he tried to say we were not a legitimately great team by saying we were dirty and then refused to let Isiah on the dream team. I understand if you said in Cleveland they have no right to boo him, because all he did was beat them every year. Here in Deetroit though, he should be booed loud and clear. People forget how he acted in those days even here in Deetroit and only remember the Pistons walking off the court in 91. I'll always hate the guy along with his choke artist buddy Pippen. At the same time i'll always smile knowing that he went home every year he played us until the bad boys were older and out of their primes. |

I don't know if McLain is important enough to hate, and besides, he is not reviled for anything he did here while playing sports. But, he is a wretched scumbag, a self-inflated human roach who richly deserves our contempt, and I am damned sick of the fact that, every few years, some local journalist decides to check in with him so we all can get an update on his whereabouts and how he's doing... "Hour" magazine, most recently. I wouldn't even be surprised if McLain, and his numerous chins, showed up on local TV again. |

Claude Lemuiex is up there. Tiger fans should not be fans of Ozzie Guillen for his various disrespectful episodes and harshness for Magglio Ordonez. Apparantly Chris Chelios is the biggest villain in Edmonton (anyone who saw those games knows what I mean), and he generally is hated by most of his opponents anyway. |

I've always thought Chris Pronger was one of the dirtier players in the NHL. Didn't like him in St. Louis, don't like him any better in Edmonton. every time Pronger touches the puck, me and my buddy love to shout "hit him in the heart", after he was essentially brought back to life on the ice by Wings trainers, and then later called us the "Dead Things". hate him. also, how 'bout Larry Bird? and yes, i HATED Jordan too. |

How many of these hated sports figures would be revered if they were suddenly traded to our teams now? I look at Chris Chelios when he played for the Hawks. He was booed incessantly by the Joe Louis faithful and now that he sports the winged wheel, he's beloved. |

The ol' Avalanche & Wings rivalry was of epic proportions. The hatred we all had for Lemieux after the Draper incident was really magnified by the fact that the slug never apologized for the hit. I could care less if he didn't mean it but at least have the respect for a fellow player. It could have easily been him on the next shift. And Patrick Roy & his grimacing self always wasa smug bastard. I'm still glad that the last time we played him we chased him from the rink in 2002. |

It's got to be Bill Ezinicki! Ted Lindsay hit him in the head with his stick in a fight and gave him enough stitches to weave and Indian Blanket! Subsequent fights created Rivers of Blood by the Ezinicki and Lindsay. When Lindsay was called to Commissioner Campbell's office in Montreal he got a three (3) game suspension. On his way out of Campbell's office the reporters asked Lindsay what he thought of the three (3) game suspensions and he said, "Cheap at twice the price!" Whereupon Campbell said, "Now you've got six (6) games, do you want to try for twelve (12) games. Lindsay was mute from this point on. Classic fights with enough corpuscles spilled to fill a blood bank! :-) Here is Ezinicki on the left and Lindsay on the right with two officials in between them. Livedog2 |

Darcy "Speedbag" Tucker is clearly up there. Mind you, I must say I've never much cared for Iverson. The entire Philadelphia Flyers Organization. Bobby Clarke's a real a-hole. Fantastic little run in with him when I was living in Peterborough, ON and he was running the team's training camp. My personal favourite was when he fired his head coach for having cancer. Real class act. |

Bobby Clarke...sigh. What a dope. As far as I'm concerned I hope as long as he's a member of the Flyers organization I hope they never even get near a Stanley Cup again. During the Wings' clash with them for the Cup run, Clarke was such the cheap ass manager settling for inferior goaltending and thinking his Legion of Doom was going to bring them the Cup. I cherished those shots of him up his his booth sweating it as we ran over them. I never liked him as a player and even like him less now as a GM. |

During the "Bad Boys" era, I was in Atlanta for a business trip while the Pistons were in town to play the Hawks during a playoff series. Back in my hotel room, I was watching the early local news and the sportscaster was doing a live remote from outside the arena. He was going on and on about how the Hawks fans HATED that dirty player, Bill Laimbeer. "Exhibit A" was a car that some good old boy had parked under a tree for several days while it accumulated a thick covering of bird droppings. He then partially scraped off the windshield and drove it down to the arena, where he added a sign that said "Laimbeer Eats Here". The sportscaster thought that was the funniest thing he had ever seen. |

smogboy, if it encourages the competitive spirit for detroit sports club owners, i'm all for it. karmanos took a huge gamble on downtown detroit, by constructing an architecturally significant plaza and bringing jobs to the city. now, bill davidson and his pistons venue reside in the suburbs, and he lobbied against the legislation allowing casinos in detroit - for fear that the city would become an entertainment destination - and in time, acts might skip the palace and perform in detroit. (it could still happen.) so: i'd be happy if karmanos got some success - and i don't remember anyone grousing too much when davidson's tampa bay lightning got their cup! (note: mr. davidson has contributed greatly to the dso, and i'm sure other notable causes worthwhile to the city.) |
