Any Dylan fans out there? These are some of my favorite Dylan lyrics. What are your favorites?

All lyrics written by Bob Dylan.

"With haunted hearts through the heat and cold,
We never thought we could ever get old.
We thought we could sit forever in fun
But our chances really was a million to one."

“Bob Dylan’s Dream” Freewheelin 1969

The older I get, the more these words mean to me. It’s hard to believe that Bob wrote this when he was only 22. He should have written this as a 60 year old.

“You'll be doin' society a favor.
That sonofabitch is brave and gettin' braver.
We want to put his ass in stir
We want to pin this triple murder on him
He ain't no Gentleman Jim."

“Hurricane” Desire 1976

This is one of my favorite Dylan songs. I love the way that he rhymes “stir” with “mur”.

"Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now."

“My Back Pages” Another Side of Bob Dylan 1964

Seemingly a contradiction that make so much sense.

"Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an' worse
An' for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing."

“Chimes of Freedom” Another Side of Bob Dylan 1964

I love the alliteration “countless, confused, accused, misused”.

"Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?"

“Like a Rolling Stone” Highway 61 Revisited 1965

OK, I know that this is more than a few lines, but I had to pick my favorite part of what arguably is the greatest Dylan song and the greatest rock song of all time.

"Well I'm drivin' in the flats in a Cadillac car
The girls all say, 'You're a worn out star'"

“Summer Days” Love and Theft 2001

Bob making fun of himself.

"She says, "You can't repeat the past." I say, "You can't? What do you mean, you can't? Of course you can."

“Summer Days” Love and Theft 2001

If anyone can, Bob can.

NOTE: This album was released on 9/11, 2001. It never got the critical acclaim that it deserved.

"Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind,
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach,
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow."

“Mr. Tambourine Man” Highway 61 Revisited 1965

Probably the first Dylan song I ever heard, only it was the Byrd’s cover. What a great mind picture he paints.

"I'm out here a thousand miles from my home,
Walkin' a road other men have gone down.
I'm seein' your world of people and things,
Your paupers and peasants and princes and kings.

Here's to Cisco an' Sonny an' Leadbelly too,
An' to all the good people that traveled with you.
Here's to the hearts and the hands of the men
That come with the dust and are gone with the wind."

“Song to Woody” Bob Dylan 1962

Bob’s tribute to his mentor and role model. It’s hard to believe that Dylan was only 20 or 21 when he wrote this. His genius shone through at an early age.

"They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy,
She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me.
I can't help it if I'm lucky."

”Idiot Wind” Blood on the Tracks 1975

This makes me laugh every time I hear it.

"Close your eyes, close the door,
You don't have to worry any more.
I'll be your baby tonight."

“I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight” John Wesley Harding 1967

Bob’s gentle side.

"Throw my ticket out the window,
Throw my suitcase out there, too,
Throw my troubles out the door,
I don't need them any more
'Cause tonight I'll be staying here with you."

“Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You”
Nashville Skyline 1969

I just like the sound of these words working together.

"My love she speaks like silence,
Without ideals or violence,
She doesn't have to say she's faithful,
Yet she's true, like ice, like fire."

“Love Minus Zero/No Limit” Bringing It All Back Home 1965

Dylan’s greatest love song, at least at the beginning before it just gets strange. Great song title. I used the title in my wedding vows.

"I started out on burgundy
But soon hit the harder stuff
Everybody said they'd stand behind me
When the game got rough
But the joke was on me
There was nobody even there to call my bluff
I'm going back to New York City
I do believe I've had enough"

“Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” Highway 61 Revisited 1965

A fitting ending to Dylan’s stream of consciousness ramblings in this song. Also, one of my favorite song titles.

"She takes just like a woman, yes, she does
She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl."

“Just Like a Woman” Blonde on Blonde 1966

Every man can relate to these lyrics.

No, I do not feel that good
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief
Perhaps I'd rob them

And now I know you're dissatisfied
With your position and your place
Don't you understand
It's not my problem

I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you

Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is
To see you

Pretty much sums up my feelings about most people on this planet.

Johnny's in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
I'm on the pavement
Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off
Look out kid
It's somethin' you did
God knows when
But you're doing it again
You better duck down the alleyway
Lookin' for a new friend
The man in the coonskin cap
In the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills
But you only got ten

People don't do what they believe in
they just do what's most convenient
and then they repent

With an assist from Sam Sheppard on that one. For as celebrated as his idealistic early stuff is, for my money it is when Dylan gets cynical that he gets really good. The Times They Never Really A Changed, but “Only A Pawn In Their Game” still rings true.

I like to spend some time in Mozambique
The sunny sky is aqua blue
And all the couples dancing cheek to cheek.
It's very nice to stay a week or two.

There's lots of pretty girls in Mozambique
And plenty time for good romance
And everybody likes to stop and speak
To give the special one you seek a chance
Or maybe say hello with just a glance.

Lying next to her by the ocean
Reaching out and touching her hand,
Whispering your secret emotion
Magic in a magical land.

And when it's time for leaving Mozambique,
To say goodbye to sand and sea,
You turn around to take a final peek
And you see why it's so unique to be
Among the lovely people living free
Upon the beach of sunny Mozambique.

Mozambique !!
...this song takes me on vacation in my mind.

Gets my ire up every time I listen to it...

quote:

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

My milk shake brings all the boys to the yard,
and they're like,
its better than yours,
damn right its better than yours,
I can teach you,
but I have to charge

My milk shake brings all the boys to the yard,
and they're like,
its better than yours,
damn right its better than yours,
I can teach you,
but I have to charge

I know you want it,
the thing that makes me,
what the guys go crazy for.
They lose their minds,
the way I wind,
I think its time

la la-la la la,
warm it up.
la la-la la la,
the boys are waiting

la la-la la la,
warm it up.
la la-la la la,
the boys are waiting

We live in a political world,
Love don't have any place.
We're living in times where men commit crimes
And crime don't have a face

We live in a political world,
Icicles hanging down,
Wedding bells ring and angels sing,
Clouds cover up the ground.

We live in a political world,
Wisdom is thrown into jail,
It rots in a cell, is misguided as hell
Leaving no one to pick up a trail.

We live in a political world
Where mercy walks the plank,
Life is in mirrors, death disappears
Up the steps into the nearest bank.

We live in a political world
Where courage is a thing of the past
Houses are haunted, children are unwanted
The next day could be your last.

We live in a political world.
The one we can see and can feel
But there's no one to check, it's all a stacked deck,
We all know for sure that it's real.

We live in a political world
In the cities of lonesome fear,
Little by little you turn in the middle
But you're never sure why you're here.

We live in a political world
Under the microscope,
You can travel anywhere and hang yourself there
You always got more than enough rope.

We live in a political world
Turning and a'thrashing about,
As soon as you're awake, you're trained to take
What looks like the easy way out.

We live in a political world
Where peace is not welcome at all,
It's turned away from the door to wander some more
Or put up against the wall.

We live in apolitical world
Everything is hers or his,
Climb into the frame and shout God's name
But you're never sure what it is.

Remember when Bob Seger was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Dylan was playing at the State - he played "Get Out of Denver" and it freaking ROCKED !

There - now its a Detroit related thread.

Just chill, admins'll move it when they see it.

That "Get out of Denver" was awesome...as was the "Ball & Biscuit" on night 3.

Not to mention the suprising "Silvio" opener.

3 really good nights for me.

Here you go Lil Pup - from MP3.com

"After relocating to Toronto, she married folksinger Chuck Mitchell in 1965, and began performing under the name Joni Mitchell. A year later the couple moved to Detroit, MI, but separated soon after; Joni remained in the Motor City, however, and won significant press acclaim for her burgeoning songwriting skills and smoky, distinctive vocals, leading to a string of high-profile performances in New York City."

So you was definitely right on that one, I stand corrected.

Ritchie Havens lived here too, and I think is still in the area. Joni talks about Havens in "Last Time I saw Richard"

"The last time I saw Richard it was in Detroit in 1968....."

Natalie Merchant lived in Detroit in 1967 .

I love watching the movie, "The last Waltz". I love the Bob Dylan segments. The soundtrack has some additional songs not in the movie with Dylan. The movie also had Joni Mitchell singing solo and backup on a Neil Young song.

Oh, it's shameful and it's sad,
I lost the only pal I had,
I just could not be what she wanted me to be.
I will turn my head up high
To that dark and rolling sky,
For tonight no light will shine on me.

~Nobody 'Cept You~

Used to play in the cemetery
Dance and sing and run when I was a child
You know it never seemed strange.
But now I just pass mournfully
By that place where the bones of life are piled
I know something has changed

I'm a stranger here
And no one sees me
Except you
Yeah you...

~Man in the Long Black Coat~

Preacher was a talkin' there's a sermon he gave,
He said every man's conscience is vile and depraved,
You cannot depend on it to be your guide
When it's you who must keep it satisfied.
It ain't easy to swallow, it sticks in the throat,
She gave her heart to the man
In the long black coat.

There are no mistakes in life some people say
It is true sometimes, you can see it that way.
People don't live or die, people just float.
She went with the man
In the long black coat.

There's smoke on the water, it's been there since June,
Tree trunks uprooted, 'neath the high crescent moon
Feel the pulse and vibration and the rumbling force
Somebodys out there beating on a dead horse.

She never said nothing, there was nothing she wrote,
Shes gone with the man
In the long black coat.

You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning

You got a lotta nerve
To say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on
The side that's winning

You say I let you down
You know it's not like that
If you're so hurt
Why then don't you show it

You say you lost your faith
But that's not where it's at
You had no faith to lose
And you know it

I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd
You're in with

Do you take me for such a fool
To think I'd make contact
With the one who tries to hide
What he don't know to begin with

You see me on the street
You always act surprised
You say, "How are you?" "Good luck"
But you don't mean it

When you know as well as me
You'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once
And scream it

No, I do not feel that good
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief
Perhaps I'd rob them

And now I know you're dissatisfied
With your position and your place
Don't you understand
It's not my problem

I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you

Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is
