Jim Rome's a jerk, Pat Caputo's a joke, Art Regner's an idiot ... but no one was a bigger arse than Gregg Henson.

Discuss.

3G has posted on his site that he has made an effort (slight thankfully) to return to Detroit. It seems that his mother is ill and is in the area. Even though I can't stand his allegiances in teams, he somehow sucks people in sometimes to listen to him.

What ever happened to the MegaMan?

Or Electrifying Mojo?

Jim Rome = Sophomoric. His callers are dittoheads in the vein of Rush Limbaugh. His interviews are brutal worship sessions. Syndicated, not local

Pat Caputo = I think one of the best on the dial. He's the least pretentious, anyway, and nobody dissects baseball better.

Art Regner = annoying nasal voice

Mike Vallenti (sp?) = Wow is this guy angry. And would you stop with the "let's go da da people" already?

Wojo = A voice fit only for print

Stony + Wojo = you hear very little about actual sport on their show, lots of dumb skits and promotional wackiness

Ill-fated Locker Room on 1270 = It's a shame the ratings weren't better for these guys. They had the best, intelligent sports-centered show on the dial, period.

Harper - I agree henson is the biggest trash to ever be on detroit radio in the name of sports talk. He would say some of the most assenine yah hoo crap and get away with it. The other dj's would say it must be alright because someone put him in charge so I am going to say this crap over the air also.

Come on, I love Rome. It's the best show on. Although the 2 Live Stews on 1200 is coming on strong.

Regner is a total homer. He adds nothing.

Dan Patrick is good if you can find him.

Terry Foster is great but he needs a better partner.

Caputo does his homework and knows what he's talking about especally baseball. Needs to be on more.

Jamie and Brady are pretty good too.

Eli needs his own show.

Didn't Mega get picked up for solicitation in Indiana a few years ago? At the time I thought he worked for one of Bardens casinos.

Rome is horrid sports talk, but incredible entertainment due to his hysterical rants and larger-than-life cult of personality perpetuated by the rabid fan base he enjoys. Smackoff is this Friday, and it's a guarantee there are thousands of people out there who will take sick days from work to stay home and listen to it. Yeah, it's sad, it's pathetic, but it's funny.

The best sports talk in Detroit used to be Ike "The Megaman" Griffin on 1130. But he's been gone for years. I heard he had legal trouble, but I've never been able to confirm it.

I usually get all my sports talk these days from 1050 WTKA out of Ann Arbor, they're the flagship station for all Michigan sports, and since I pretty much only follow the major revenue sports at Michigan plus a couple non-revenue as well, it fits my liking. Though they've gone through some turnover in the past year and lost a lot of their better hosts. Losing Fithian in the afternoon was a major blow, and their morning show has really gotten iffy.

Wojo-Annoying as hell. I like Stoney, but when he's teamed with the buffoon I just can't listen at all.

Mike Valenti-I have a very low tolerance level for his "I'm an angry guy" shtick. Foster isn't bad, but too often he plays along with Valenti's shtick and their show turns into a mess in my opinion. I tuned their show in today and they spent 10 minutes arguing and yelling about what they were going to eat for lunch before I finally gave up and turned it off.

Pat Caputo-He's very good on baseball, but his basketball knowledge is very sub par.

I actually like Jim Rome. His callers can be annoying, but I think he's pretty funny. Today he did a bit on golfer John Daly and his gambling problems that had me laughing out loud.

Overall I think that the sports radio personalities here are pretty bad. Too much shtick and people who think they're funnier than they actually are and not enough substance.
What does it tell you when Mark Spindler can get a job in this market? A good day for him is when he can string together two complete sentences. Sometimes I find it enjoyable just to listen to him butcher the english language.

Jim Rome is alright at best. What annoys me is that his questions are pretty lame and it's almost like he's got it scripted. No follow-ups whatsoever. His listeners (that Rome cultivates like a bad crop) are literally clones (as he calls them)- which begs the question...why do I want to hear guys who sound and act like Rome? I want differing views & opinions. I want to hear different opinions and not just Jim Rome's; I want dialogue, not copy-cat kiss asses. Granted he does get some interesting guests.

Jamie & Brady are alright. Pretty knowledgable but I only get to hear them for a few moments in the morning on my way into work.

Sean Baligian can be entertaining but annoying by his own admission with his love of the Habs.

Stoney & Wojo are fine. They've evolved into much much more schtick than actual sports discussion which is fine with me. They have more lame games than actual discussions now.

Art Regner, I can't stand because he is such a homer, not just to the Wings but to UofM as well. If I want objectivity, I know not to listen to him.

Gregg Henson was always just as a sh!t stirrer- much more suited to the 97.1 WKRK format than sports.

I like Terry Foster on the radio but he does need someone less buffoonish than Mike Valenti to be a foil.

Caputo/ the Book on sports is a bit of a blowhard. Ideal for baseball but seems a little lacking on other sports.

I actually like some of the guest hosts that WDFN brings in such as Angelique Chengelis, Vic Faust, and Tom (I blew another Lions prediction) "the Killer" Kowalski. They seem to bring some fresh insights but it's probably like the love affair we seem to have with all back-up positions like the Lions QB or Wings goalie.

It's also times like this that I miss Sabrina Black. She was always a perfect foil for all of the sports geeks out there and she was an extremely bright and vivacious person. She'll be sorely missed.

No commentary on Parker & the Man yet??

Sometimes these guys are pretty hard hitting and they're none too shabby. They ask some pretty pertinent questions at times and seem to be very knowledgable.

I think they're all horseshit, with few exceptions.
The guy I love to hate is Caputo.
Why? Because he can't spell his own name, that's why.

His writing, if you can call it that, is atrocious.
Just listen to the guy speak, and you realize he's got some decent editors at the Oakland Press. And they're decent, at best. They still can't save him from looking like a fool.

I forgot about Baligian.

My God ... how could anyone like this guy?
He's not evil like Gregg Henson, but he's equally deplorable. These guys forget they're just talking about sports. They think a hockey game is life and death.

And Art Regner ... you're the biggest embarassment to the University of Michigan since Gary Moeller.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Regner's straight man Doug Karsh. He's the best.

But no one will ever beat Damon "The Dog" Perry in my eyes. Loved the Doggy.

Gregg Henson is obsessed with his penis. Which must mean it's really, really small.

What ever happened to a gal on sports-talk radio whom I think was called "The Babe".? I am going back to the mid-90's. I liked her, and she conducted a good interview, not monopolizing the conversation ala Mitch Albom style.
I was told she had passed away of cancer, and some one else claimed the network just did not renew her contract.

Rome's overrated. I only wish Jim Everett would have pounded him into the ground years back when Rome smarted off to him on ESPN.

Stoney and Wojo are good. You have to realize their show, while based on sports is geared toward entertainment and humor. But I believe they both have excellent sports knowledge, and they are pretty good with guests. They are usually good for a few good laughs on the way home from work.

Her real name is Nancy something. Not sure where she went to. Come to think of it, where has Joe Dimaggio gone?

Sure wish someone could tell me why Stoney is worth the money they pay him. He's wishy washy, rarely has his facts straight and if he predicts one of our teams to do well...they almost always lose as well as vice versa. At least the fat man is knowledgable about the games and knows his history. When Stoney's there by himself I almost always switch stations.
And if Terry Foster wasnt so in love with himself he just might have more time to add something of value. His knowledge of hockey and the Wings is pitiful. If he's gonna take a position like that he ought to at least take the time to learn the game somewhat!

I think most sports talk guys are clueless.

Jim Rome's show is more about humor and shock-jock style entertainment, than it is about sports. He is like the Howard Stern of sports talk. I like the show, but I don't listen for the incredible insight into the world of sports.

I consider Pat Caputo to be an exception to most of the other local sports talk guys (especially on baseball). During the lean years of Tigers baseball, most of the local hosts had nothing to offer. The usual Tiger discussion went something like this:

The Tigers suck... complain... I think [insert player name here] is shitty... complain... I think [insert manager name here] should be fired... complain... The Tigers need to go sign [insert top free agent here]... complain...

Pat Caputo was the only guy that would come on the air and talk about what was really going on. Pat had constant insight on prospects and player development, real information on the reasons and realities behind the situation, and a solid grasp on what was really going on.

Sports talk radio needs more guys like Pat Caputo.

I'm tired of know-nothing morons like Rob Parker spewing their ignorance.

Rob Parker went on and on about the stupidity of the recent signings of Todd Jones and Kenny Rogers. During the off-season, Rob Parker was calling for Dave Dombrowski's head. He couldn't see the difference between Dombrowski and Matt Millen.

According to Rob Parker, Dombrowski was just as bad as Millen, because the Tigers hadn't won anything. The recent improvements in the farm system, quality draft picks, brilliant trades, and dramatic increase in talented players, due to the management of Dave Dombrowski, was totally lost on Rob Parker. Even a casual Tiger fan could see the dramatic increase of talent under Dombrowski, but all of this was lost on Rob Parker.

Stoney & Wojo are a little boring.

I despise Jim Rome, that self-serving, arrogant prick.

Balisian admits he doesn't like baseball and is pretty much a super hockey fan, so I have little use for him.

I enjoy Parker & the Man, although Mark Wilson is a diehard Cub fan. That's worth minus 20 points right there.

When you think about it, sports radio in of itself is pretty infantile. It's just like what sports are...it's entertainment. It's nothing groundbreaking, earth shattering or monumental by any means. All of the people that report on sports are fans first & foremost.

sports talk radio in this town is pretty bad,no insight just surface talk and opinions coming out of left field. With that being said Valenti and Foster are in my opinion the best talk show in Detroit. Valenti love him or hate him, has well thought out opinions and can talk schemes, strategy, x's and o's. To be so young the guy is talented, once you get past his angry man act. Foster has the contacts in the local sports world plus he is knowledgeable in the major sports as well. They have knowledge beyond just the casual fan sports talk host. Also you find that the Sports Inferno has very few guests such as coaches GM's and the like. I truly believe its because those guys don't want to get called out for some of the bonehead decisions they make.

Jim Rome is the Howard Cosell type. You like him, or you hate him. I like him O.K. He is capable of being quite funny, but he can really beat a topic to death. I happen to think that he's a good interviewer. The fact that he is so fervently in love with himself is grating, at times, but nothing could be more tiresome and nauseating as the way so many of his callers (who are such losers that they wait all goddam day to get on the air with him) mimic him, using all the words and phrases that have sprung from Rome's personal lexicon: Thanks for the vine, 500 grrr, lettuce, beefroids, etc.
I could comment on just about everybody, but I am trying to listen to the Tiger game right now. Still, I want to point out that I like Rob Parker. Not only is he a big baseball fan, which counts for some points with me, but he seems so devoid of pretense. He comes across as just A Guy, which is refreshing.
For my money, a non-local guy named J.T. The Brick is outstanding. He is another one who seems a bit too stuck on himself, but the guy really is good at what he does. He's a good interviewer, he lets callers talk a bit without running all over them, and I'll tell you one thing that's for damn sure: Like anyone, he's into some sports more than others, but he can hold up his end of the conversation regarding just about any sport.
Sean B. on WDFN: Sorry; can't tolerate the voice.
Stoney & Wojo are O.K., but, one day, I need to get on the air with them and BEG Wojo to stop using the phrase, "That's alls I'm sayin'." This guy is actually a competent writer; why does he insist on using a phrase that makes him sound so ignorant?
O.K., time to date myself. I have liked Eli since the days when he was on WABX FM, and used Sweet Georgia Brown as his theme song.
Anyone remember Ron Cameron? That's going back to the late 70's. He was another self-loving blowhard, but he, too, was quite knowledgeable. At one time, his on-air partner was none other than George Blaha.

J.T. the Brick won the very first Jim Rome Smack-Off, I think, and as a result got his start in radio on another local California station.

I miss Doug Karsch on WTKA in the afternoons. He's on 1270 now, right?
