Interesting. They gotta have something like this, because people aren't going there for their coffee...

The coffee is hit and miss depending on who makes the drink.

I stopped into the Amsterdam shop yesterday, and it was great. I am not a coffee drinker, so I cannot speak to that.
But the place was clean and cute, the owner was super nice and friendly, they are open until at least 7:00 p.m. during the week and 9 on weekends, you can smoke cigarettes there, which I like, there are plenty of tables. I will go back soon and often.

The reviews of the Amsterdam Café have been very positive, so far. They have Lavazza beans, which are awesome. I suggest many more people to give your reviews of this place.

As for Beans & Bytes, I have been unimpressed. I have stopped there 3 times and every time the coffee, Cappuccino and Latté sucked.

wow that is a harsh assessment, although i would definitely say b/b have focused more on ambience than the beverage.

amsterdam has done the unthinkable- it has turned me into an iced coffee drinker! it is shaping up to be a smash, definitely with the people in the neighborhood.

Never had their coffee but B&B does have good hot chocolates and ciders and they sell sandwiches which, though not made in the store, are made somewhere else locally daily and are pretty good. Nice for a quick burst of sustenance and liquid calories, maybe even some caffeine. I've never been there during an event so I've never seen it crowded in there. It does seem like a good place for networking, in several senses.

Those sandwiches are from Chef Steve, made at Lunchtime in New Center, and they rock! BTW I ran into him the other day at the Caribou in Grosse Pointe on Mack and he said he was finally moving out of the city into the Pointes because the kids were old enough for school.

Ah, I was wondering if they were Lunchtime Detroit sandwiches... those are excellent. They also have them at the Rowland Cafe downtown. (My favorite is the cherry chicken salad sandwich.)

Where is the Amsterdam coffee shop, btw? I don't see it in the metrotimes guide.

Magnasco's info about Chef Steve:

Geez, I've never heard of that happening before.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be too harsh. But, I am, somewhat, a coffee-snob. Caffine alone does nothing for me. It must taste good and without adding syrup for flavoring (just a little sugar and creme).

Anyway, what I am GLAD about is that B&B is doing well and they have found their market in that location. They are offering a valuable service to the community and I applaud them... I just wish they could be all that AND serve a decent cuppajoe. That's all. When that happens, they will have my business more often, because I hate Starbucks.
