quote:Taking the President to Court So, I am going to court. With many of my Democratic Colleagues (list appended at the bottom of this diary), I plan to file suit tomorrow in federal district court in Detroit against the President, members of the Cabinet and other federal officers seeking to have a simple truth confirmed: a bill not passed by the House and Senate is not a law, even if the President signs it.

But President Bush is the "Decider!" If we let things like the constitution get in the way then, by golly, the terrorists will stop the cuts to medicare that are vital to this nation's national defenses. |

The Republicans are smearing John Conyers and Charles Rangel. Judiciary and Finance would be in their hands and that makes the right wingers cringe. Combine that duo with a Democratic President and Congress could change things, and things need changing. jjaba, first helped elect John Conyers in 1964. |

Blame jjaba and the voters who put John Conyers in since 1964. How many elections did he stand for? Amazing. He's almost rivals John Dingell. Even The Rock hasn't got that kind of record. And The Rock knows how to work a precinct. (No socks in summer, Pink Izod shirt, khakis.) jjaba taught Conyers how to say SAALAM ALEKUM. jjaba, Westside precinct captain. |

John Conyers was born in 1929 in Detroit. He's 75 yrs. old now. He holds a JD degree from Wayne State. (1958) Admitted to Michigan Bar, 1959. He served in Korean War and worked for Cong. John Dingell 1959-61. In the 2004 election vs. Veronica Pedraza, he won by 84%, drawing more than John Kerry by 11% in his District. In 1964, he was elected to the House of Reps. in Dist. 1. In 2000, he was assigned to Dist. 14 in a re-shuffle. He represents Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Dearborn, and some downriver communities. Rosa Parks worked for Conyers, 1965-1988. Conyers has been in Congress 40 yrs., second only to Dingell as the Dean. Conyers has run 20 times and won 20 times. He is Dean of the Black Caucus. In 1974, Conyers was active in the Watergate Hearings and the onliest Congressman to also be on the Clinton Impeachment hearings. The slang for this kind of seat is "Conyers holds a Civil Service Seat." Safe Safe Safe. jjaba worked in the 1964 campaign when he lived on Ewald Circle on the Westside of Detroit. jjaba. |

The Rock: Your Honor, I move that jjaba's testimony be stricken from the record. The question posed was who did Conyers defeat in the '64 Congressional election, and all we got was a self-serving, pious platitude. Court: Motion Granted, moving party will submit a taxed Bill of Costs. |

There's no need to get exercised over the likes of gadflies on Capitol Hill such as Conyers and his analog in the Senate, Russ Feingold. If there were windmills in DC, they would be tilting with them instead. And they'll never ever become Committee chairmen again. But the radiclibs can dream their impossible dreams when they sleep, for what good that brings. |

John Conyers has brought millions of the Federal trough to Detroit. Obviously, he can't save Detroit from itself. He is well known for hospital projects. He is held in high esteem by Black Americans on par with Adam Clayton Powell, Louis Stokes, Whitney Young, Andrew Young, Maynard Jackson, Richard Hatcher, and Coleman Young. He represents Detroit with dignity. On the nation's issues, he take no prisoners. He loves to duke it out with everybody. He championed the cause to free South Africans. Rock, your honour, jjaba is still trying to find your answer. If you know, instead of taunting, tell us who ran against Conyers in 1964. For crissakes, that was 20 elections ago. What is jjaba, chopped liver? jjaba. |

okay, jjaba, I will check with his various offices and see what I can find regarding the 1964 election. However, since Mr. Conyers is out of Washington so much on his various cross-country ventures, it might be awhile before we ( I ) get the answer. So to quote your other buddy, the late Adam Clayton Powell (who I think got excluded from the House in the 60's for spending too much time in Bimini), "Keep The Faith,Baby." |

The republican candidate in a '64 Detroit congressional election would have been a formality (even moreso than nowadays). Remember, LBJ took something like 2/3rds of the votes in the state that election and probably polled over 3/4 in Detroit so in addition to a strong D district you had a very strong national candidate running for pres. Typical of Detroit elections then and now, the interesting stuff would have been during the primary ... I'll ask my father if he has any anecdotes ... Yay Detroit! |

There was probably a redistricting around that time, or switched districts, as Nedzi never lost an election until he retired in 1980. Some people know when to retire. He was chairman of the Select Intelligence Committee for the Watergate hearings, and on the House Defense Committee. (Also was my mom's next door neighbor growing up in Hamtramack, and lived in our Nortown neighborhood near Van Dyke and Outer Drive.) |
