Everyone knows how much I love this city but the city management absolutely plain sucks. Just an example of how unresponsive and slow this city is: There is a traffic light in the heart of downtown Detroit at the corner of Woodward and Witherall just south of GCP. The red light on Witherall on the east side of Woodward has been out for over 2 months. How many city officals/elected officals/important people drive by this daily?! Yet nothing gets done. Now, the green light on the same corner on Woodward has been out for over three weeks. We install these brand new shining traffic lights and can't even change a simple traffic light and this is in the heart of downtown!! I can't even imagine how many aren't taken care of throughout the neighborhoods. It is absolutely ridiculous and even though it is such a small thing is an example of the crappy management of this city. If we can't even do something so small such as this task, how are we ever going to move some of the mountains that we have ahead of us? Take any surrounding suburb and this would not be allowed. I live downtown and I will continue to do so but when people wonder why it seems like we aren't moving forward at times take a look at who we have running this city!

What, is the Super Bowl coming up? We don't need lights unless there is a SuperBowl.

city officials, cops, buses, etc don't stop at red lights anyway. They'll never notice

Damn, I was expecting a Polish joke...
Anyway one solution might be to privatize non-essential city services. I don't blame the workers necessarily, but the Mayor/CCs' friends who get these jobs and are never pressured to perform their actual jobs.

Or could it be that the people assigned to change light bulbs on traffic lights in a 139 square mile vehicle centered city have a big back log?

Maybe the question is why they have a backlog?

Maybe Rberlin is on the right track, but maybe they don't have the right equipment, information, communication, or something else they need to do their jobs.

How come there are so many traffic lights that are not in use (hanging on their side behind other lights)? Are these ready replacements for the ones that the city expects to be vandalized or break?

There is an ongoing project to replace signals across the city.

They new ones have to be strung up and tested before the old ones can be removed. There is an overlap.

Woodward is a state controlled road, blame MDOT or at least tell them first.

Well it must be a project that is quite backed up, but then again with a major city it must be an ongoing one. Jsmyers, thanks for the information though.

Woodward is a city road between Jefferson and Adams, so you should call Detroit DPW at the 311 number or their general number is 313-224-3900 to report a problem.

3 months ago the traffic light at woodward and congress was out. I called public lighitng, 313-224-0500 and the gentleman told me he would contact MDOT via wayne county roads to fix it since it was a state run road. Since that is between Jefferson and Adams I would call public lighting and ask them if MDOT can help.

Tell them those blue round lights installed on the people mover track before superbwo at park and woodward are 80% burned out now too.

The general number to 311 is 313-224-INFO(4636) although many city numbers forward there now.

A few years ago, the pedestal light on the NE corner of Congress and Wash Blvd. was out. I called two or three different numbers and was finally told it had been previously reported as "not operating", but had been added to the repair list.
I think it took a good 6 months to get it operable. Fortunately, the intersection was controlled by other lights so maybe the pedestal light was not high on the priority list ( unless you were a pedestrian).

In SW Detroit the I-75 service drive at Junction and several other streets have had non-functioning traffic signals for over a year. The City's solution? Put up stop signs and make it a 4 way stop. Much easier to blow through the intersection now on my way to Duly's.

You have to keep bugging until a) they listen and put it on their list. b) they stop answering their phones.

WHich begs the question - why doesn't Detroit have a web based site to file these reports and check on status.

Could cut a lot of people from the phones and delete many duplicate calls as well as tracks metrics on resolution time.

You could have top DPS students work as interns and set this stuff up with the oversight and review of the CoD IT management staff or integrator.

Exactly and almost every other city in Michigan can change a traffic light when it is out, it is sad that the largest city in the state doesn't have capabilities to do that.

Another example of the lack of responsibility and management is they put those beautiful nice blue bulbs on the DPM track in front of the Whitney building for the Superbowl then surely one is out, two are out, three, etc. I think all but one or two are working now. It's so senseless, we install these beautiful features but just let them rot and can't even do easy maintenance on them.

I agree with you 100% Homer. Some intersections in Downtown Detroit has old non-functioning traffic signals with stop signs. That's not call management, that's call being lazy. The city NEEDS to take then down for good. The funny thing about all of this, the city is installing new signals all over town but they can't change a bulb and taking down the non-functioning signals. What a joke!!!

I get a bigger laugh out of the stoplights in all those abandoned neighborhoods where they gotta help traffic move from prairie to prairie.

Drive up St Aubin sometime.
