Lately there has been a increase in crime around Wayne State. Two problems in particular that have happened to people I know have involved a gun. One was a hold up of 3 18 year old girls on Warren and Trumbull, the other was a hold up on Avery of all streets. I think that these crooks are listening to the media saying Detroit has a lack of cops, and thinking that they can just get away with these crimes. And as far as the hold up on Trumbull is concerned, they did get away with it.

Crime has been a problem with or without a lot of cops on the street for years.
You think a crook is going to stop because more cops are around?
If you need dough for a fix, you'll get it one way or another.
Murders aren't going to go up or down with more cops around either. Most of them are behind closed doors anyways.
If there was more certainty of punishment and people would not be afraid to talk, more bad guys would be off the streets.

While the media does not help in many aspects of crime (though, it works very well in select crimes, i.e. kidnappings), it sure as heck doesn't cause crime. That's like saying the media is what's helping the Iraq War go bad.

Are crooks reading the papers?

Speaking of blaming the wrong entities for crime, I laughed when I heard a woman on WWJ this morning say that she blamed illegal after-hours clubs for Proof's death (forget the other guy, of course). That if there had been no CCC Club, he'd be alive.

Right, Proof had no say in this ...

The proliferation of guns has made life much cheaper in the city. This goes back to way before the riots.

America has always been a very violent country, and the legacy of the country's founders and forefathers shows in our society today. We've always had a frontier, "Wild, Wild, West" ideology about us.

Ask any American, Carl. In fact, ask any region of the world where guns were introduced to the population.

all these assholes need to be hung to death.. then these losers would think twice before trying to hurt anyone. hang them in public. just like the old days when men were powerful.

lmich, it's sad. we've NEVER had a world full of folks weaving daisy-chains into each others' hair.

stones, hammers, knives, axes, spears, darts, poisons, explosives, catapults. people have been killing people since - well, since there have been people.

where there is the want to do harm, harm will be done.

and, violence doesn't seem to be excluded from any society or culture we've ever known.

Media causing it, no way.

But to say having more cops wouldn't do anything is wrong too. If they had more manpower to catch criminals, maybe we could stop the repeat offenders by getting them off the street.

It might still happen once, but it wouldn't happen over and over.

Can you legally shoot someone who robs you at gunpoint?

Carl, to imply that there hasn't been inventions that have made heat-of-passing killings much easier would be naive. We may not be able to put the genie back in the bottle, but we sure as hell can make it harder for the genie to wreak havoc on humanity. Let me put it this way, if someone is going to kill me, society better make them work for it. It is no mistake that one hears very rarely of child accidentially killing itself with a knife, but hear far to often of children accidentially shooting themselves or another.
