The practice of ripping apart old magazines and even atlases to sell individual pages is disgusting. |

More hotel ads should show people smoking in bed. |

I agree, Burnsie! I was doing research last year at the U of M in Ann Arbor. I was using the Polk's Detroit City Directories in the room where they were all located. Some guy started ripping pages out of, as it turned out the 1922 book, and saw me looking at him and gave me a big shit-eating-grin. I guess he thought I was going to jump into the conspiracy with him and not say anything. Was he wrong!! I raised so much hell screaming and yelling at him that they called the Campus Police. He started to leave but I told him he would never get past me if he tried and that I would be forced to make a "Citizen's Arrest" (I don't even know what that is but I was ready to do it.) When the Campus Police got there, naturally, they wanted to know what was going on and I told them. They took a report from me and the librarian. Then they found pages he had ripped out of the book and they arrested him. I told them I would be a witness no matter I had to come from. As it turned out he pleaded guilty to some kind of misdemeanor and got community service, a fine and since he was a student was put on probation. But, I'll bet that idiot won't do that again. While I agree with your thoughts on defaming old periodicals for adds, I find it amusing that he titled his auction CHICAGO'S famous Book Cadillac Hotel. Especially when the add he posted clearly states Detroit. |

Burnie, et al: I concur. Those who destroy historic artifacts, such as old magazines, are scum. As a side note, I mentioned this to the narrator of my documentary on the B-C. She's from Chicago and got a kick out of it. http://www.BookCadillacMovie.c om/ |
