This comment below really shows why Michigan needs to pull itself together:
quote:It's never a good time or a good thing when anyone loses their jobs. My dad used to build trucks and I remember the lay-offs and the call-backs, the months spent on the picket lines and living on public aid. I also worked white collar at Ford and GM and at every quality meeting they used Toyota as the benchmark. I saw what was coming and when I had a chance I jumped, man. I ended up in Virginia and I miss Michigan but my job is better, my health is better, my future is brighter and all in all life is good. In the past I've been laid off from more jobs than some people have worked and it sucks, especially when you've got a family and that's the reason I jumped this time. I didn't want to be laid off again. Friends, do what you've got to do to feed your babies and if you've got to leave the state, then do it. Good luck and God bless.

I received my walking papers in 2002 and GM has gone nowhere but down since. GM has obviously not learned from its '80's mistake of getting rid of the people that buy their cars. This could very well be the final coffin nail... |

One of my sisters is an Engineer at the Tech Center. On Monday, all employees were asked to report to work on Tuesday at 7:AM. The regular start-time is 7:30AM for her department. Tuesday was a bloodbath. One by one, Engineers were being called into termination meetings thoughout the morning and into the afternoon. She sat there all day contemplating a jobless future with a 1-yr old baby. Slow, mental torture. Finally, at 2:PM the announcement was made: "If you're name hasn't been called, you're OK." She made the cut. WHEW! |

This is truly the end of General Motors. The Asian automobile market has eat them up. I'm not going to let any foreign cars in my driveway. |

She made THAT cut. I survived around 7 cycles in my last 6 months at Ford. I was the last in my contract house to be let go. The day I was cut around 2,500 were let go that same day. |

This is a carefully planned strategy by GM. Note the provisons of the WARN Act passed by Congress in 1988. Under this provision, if GM lays off more than 500 workers in a 30 day period it must give the employees 60 days notice. Note part-time employees, contract employees etc are exempt from this law. Hence, surviving the cut is a means whereby GM can layoff say 400 workers a month without having to comply with the provisions of WARN. Look for a steady discharge throughout the year. For those who may not be familiar with WARN. http://www.doleta.gov/layoff/p df/EmployerWARN09_2003.pdf |
