quote:Tigers Release First Baseman Carlos Pena Mar 26, 11:30 AM (ET) LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - Carlos Pena was unconditionally released Sunday by the Detroit Tigers after the first baseman struggled during spring training. Pena batted .160 with one home run in 50 at-bats in exhibition games. He split last season between Detroit and Triple-A Toledo. He hit .235 with 18 homers in 79 games with the Tigers and .311 with 12 homers with the Mud Hens. Pena signed a $2.8 million, one-year contract that wasn't guaranteed and will receive $688,525 in termination pay.

No room on first with Shelton, Dmitri, and especially after that kid Phelps hit the hide off the ball with a .531, 6HR, 17RBI spring [will be knocking on the door at Toledo]. Too bad. Pena is a good guy; I wish him well. Tigers still can be satisfied that they got Bonderman and Franklyn German out of that trade for Jeff [went nowhere] Weaver. Pena never seemed able to start in the spring. He falls for down and out junk everytime. Lance Parish had the same problem but he made it up for it in other ways. |

Unconditionally released? Ouch. You'd think the guy would have some marketability and be trade bait somewhere somehow. I always loved his defense on first. And admittedly his struggles to keep his batting average up were maddening. He would start off slower than a tortoise in mud and then by September (long after we're out of contention) he'd pick it up and bat at an amazing clip. Tough spot for the Tigers though. Like Lowell said, there are just too many more versatile & hotter bats at that position. And there really wasn't exactly too many other places he could play other than maybe DH. Nice guy who I wish well wherever he ends up. |

im betting this will be a BIG mistake... 15 homers in his last 30 games last year, and we just toss him away... bad bad bad |

That bum had chance after chance and never hit when the heat was on. He was good when nothing counted. I doubt he will even be able to carry Tony Clark's jockstrap. You have to be able to hit more than fastballs in the bigs. How many times did we see him chase crummy pitches for strikeouts? The Tigers bent over backwards hoping he'd improve and he deserved to get cut. Good riddance. |

German is also on his way out, he can't find the strike zone. Bonderman was the golden ticket in that trade the whole time, DD had serious man-love for him. |

15 homers and an almost 50% strike-out rate, not what we need. |

This is not a mistake at all, Pena could only produce numbers when the season was already over for the Tigers (August/Sept.), yet he couldn't hit a lick April-July: when it really mattered. Would have liked to see it work out with him, but not really sad he's gone. Shelton will do what Pena was supposed to do, only better. You have to wonder though, what happened to Carlos Pena? He was at one point widely considered the best prospect in all of baseball. But then he was traded twice in less than a year (from Texas to Oakland, Oakland to Detroit) and fell off the radar. It makes me wonder if the management of Texas and Oakland saw something in him or his play that tipped them off to his being a bust. Also have to wonder if Dombrowski saw it too, yet made the deal anyways since Bonderman was the real prize of it all, even then. |

Wow...I can't believe we're actually talking about Pena like a Lions draft pick alluva sudden! But I do see the analogies- great promise and yet not much of a return. And yes, this will open up 1B to some better & more versatile players like Dmitri Young & Chris Shelton. I'm just surprised that the Tigers just couldn't demote him to Toledo- was he making that much money where he wasn't worth keeping around?? You'd think he stillhas some skill to help out at that level, no? |

$2.4 million is kind of expensive for a player in Toledo, they gave Pena his chance to shine and he didn't step up to the plate. Chris Shelton did. |

Well compared to last year's big Spring Training move of keeping Bobby Higginson on the roster, at least this move shows some courage. Fish or cut bait. I still believe Trammell's fate as manager was sealed when he stuck with a dead weight never-was like Higginson instead of using the last roster spot for a potentially productive player like Marcus Thames or whomever was #26. Was that the moment he lost the locker room? Can't say but if I were a productive player on the Tigers I would have been none to happy about that decision. After 13 losing seasons you better start doing something different because more of the same won’t work. |

Even if that 25th spot went to a modern day Sandy Koufax, Trammell was toast. You're only as good as your players (ask Casey Stengel) and there weren't enough last year. |

$2.4 million? Ouch! I would've cut him too. For that kinda money, I'm sure we could spend that sorta cash elsewhere. |

Cut him and save $2.1 million? Sounds great to me. I loved his defense, as he Hoovered everything thrown his way at first, but he couldn't hit worth a shit for the first 3/4 of the year. Besides, I'd give up a little defense for Shelton's combination of power and high average any day. |

Alright! Real Coach making real decisions! I'm sure Leland had something to do with it__ I don't think 'Tram' had the vision to make that move! Maybe there is hope super d(motordetroit) |

It could literally be a Joey Harrington-esque sort of move. It's probably best that both parties split amicably and hopefully they'll both do better apart. |

Actually, yes, he is the next to be released, unless he suddenly starts actually throwing in the strike zone. But from that deal, we still have Bonderman, which is more than worth it. He is a much better pitcher than Weaver. |

I watched a part of the game last night where German was pitching and saw that his ERA was over 10.0 something. After throwing a handful of balls, the catcher Vance Wilson decides to go out and talk to the guy to calm him down and the next pitch darn near takes the guy's head off. Major league velocity? Yes, but no control. He might be gone soon if he doesn't get it together. |

I think Colon, Spurling, Zumaya, Jones, Grilli, Rodney sounds like a pretty good bullpen. Enough is enough with German |

Smogboy is 100% correct about German, I expect any day to have a press release about him being released from the team. But hey, the Devil Rays are always looking for castoff. They ended up with Alex Sanchez, and the next day he was busted for failing his drug test. |
