I know this isn't a big deal, but atleast it will pump $10 million into the economy. Detroit to host bridge championships in 2008; 6,000-7,000 players expected By Jennette Smith March 14, 2006 4:57 PM Detroit is set to host 6,000-7,000 bridge players for the 2008 Spring North American Bridge Championships. The tournament has an estimated economic impact of about $10 million, according to the American Contract Bridge League. The Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau announced the winning bid on Monday. Compuware Corp. is sponsoring the tournament. The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center is scheduled to host the March 6-16 event, which includes play ranging from beginner games to national competitions. The 2008 tournament marks the first time since 1981 that Detroit has hosted a national bridge championship, the bureau said in a news release. Peter Karmanos, Compuware chairman and CEO and an avid bridge player, said in the news release he intends to play and hopes that other local bridge players participate in the event. “Unlike the Super Bowl, you don’t have to worry about not having a ticket,” he said. “If you come, there will be a bridge table for you to compete against players at the same skill level.” http://www.crainsdetroit.com/c gi-bin/news.pl?newsId=8163 |

Interesting. Glad Detroit got the event, each tourist and each event is what eventually makes a vibrant city and a tourist destination (Message edited by motorcitymayor2026 on March 15, 2006) |

This may not seem like a big deal, but every little event, convention, etc is another way for people outside our city to come see what we have to offer. We need to court every little event to our area. |

Crap. Now I really regret not learning that game. I hear it's more brainy than chess. There's a good website (I'm certain it's gone noncommercial) where you can play and practice Bridge and many other games (Euchre, Chess, Blackjack, Craps, Poker, etc.) with others over the internet at http://hoylegames.sierra.com/ . The gambling games don't involve real money and the original designers seem to have made a great effort to make the games true to life. I have no affiliation with them. I just think it might be a good place to practice for this event. |

Too bad most of the old folks will walk away with a blank stare at the state of Detroit compared to yesteryear. At kleast Detroit gets close to $10 million. That buys a lot of leased vehicles. |

Hey, every little bit helps. When hotels are full downtown, it cannot result in a bad thing. These people have to stay somewhere and they have to eat. Plus helps fill hotels in March... |

They all have to eat, so it fill restaurants. They want entertainment, so it fills the bars and clubs. They need to get around downtown, so its is fares on the People Mover. It fills hotel rooms, so it provides taxes to the state and revenue to the companies. Win, win for the state. |

I was thinking we should launch the "Jefferson Improvement District" and "Jefferson Facade Improvement Program," immediatly. We want to be ready for when those Bridge players get here. I was thinking that the city could put up about 1.5 million, with the state kicking in the majority at 3.5 million, fully funding these two critical projects at 5 millions dollars. |

I can't help wondering if we're going to get another influx of high-priced Michigan Ave. hookers to service all those bridge players. |

Get your vacuums out because you will have to clean up all the "dust" afterwards. How many of these folks are going to stay in the 'burbs? They sure as hell ain't going to stay at the Pontch or the Ramada. |
