Any tips on where to get some decent coffee and something to eat on a Sunday morning? Seems like everything closes up today...

I just got back from the Breakfast house and grill. I'd give it a 7 out of 10. The food was good, but not great. They were out of chocolate chip pancakes and waffles, which I really wanted. The service was wonderful. The place is very nice looking.

Next I will try Union Street, I have heard great things about their brunch.

The Pancake House on Woodward in Birmingham- if you can tolerate a monstrously long line and a cash only policy. Some of the best pancakes around and the potato pancakes are to die for. Fresh squeezed orange juice that's crisp too.

But that hideous wait to get it is horrific.

Blondy - I agree with you...not a fan of the Grill. Too expensive, crowded and I hate dress codes on a weekend.

HOWEVER - I went to Atlas yesterday had an amazing crab and avacado omelette for 9.00! That is my favorite place to go. And it is rarely crowded.

Hey ild...you sure get around. I try to do the same. We ate at Chelis earlier this week. Service was mediocre and the food was decent.

Try the Clique Restaurant on East Jefferson at the Shorecrest Motor Inn. Good breakfast, reasonable price, maybe a long wait, but worth it.

The Clique is THE old-school place for breakfast. Many times, you'll see people whose names are often in the paper.

I've never done the Clique during a weekend but during the weekdays the lines aren't that bad and very very servicable food with quick service too.

La Dolce Vita - great food, great atmosphere, and a very cool 1930's Parisan type accoustic jazz band playing. Not cheap ($7-$12 per entree range), but more than reasonable for the complete experience.

Louie's Ham Shop on Harper east of Whittier west of Cadieux is my spot. Great food, very cheap, very fun bustling atmosphere. They also have a newer location in Eastern Market (I want to say on Riopelle)

I normally go to the Clique and will say it is very good. We ended up getting coffee and bagels at au bon pain, ate outside and then went for a walk along the river. Such a beautiful day!

Does anyone remember Hams Restaurant on 7 Mile west of Hayes? Baked omelette's the size of dinner plates, and hash brown sides it took two people to finish. That place was hangover heaven!

These days I hit Country Inn (we call it Log Cabin) on Mack at Radnor north of Cadieux. No more than 10-15 min wait when it's busy, but the food is stacked and cheap.

I agree with Boshna about Louie's. Lots of fun in that place.

On the near sw side is the Steak Hut on Lafayette.
Not only can you get a two dollar breakfast (2 eggs, homefries and toast) but you can eat your two dollar breakfast to the sounds of Two-Dollar Breakfast, a duo that plays some twangy folk music. I'm not much of a folk music fan, but these guys do a great show.
They have other breakfast options too. Today I was secretly coveting my neighbors omelette. It was bigger than Kwame Kilpatricks head!
After a few vists, the lovely Megan takes your order by simply reading your mind.
How's that for service?

I also enjoy Louie's on Harper. The breakfasts are great and the staff is extremely friendly. It's a nice place to chat on a Sunday morning. I've tried almost all of the breakfasts and a lot of other things on the menu...haven't been disappointed yet!

Motown Coney Island on Jefferson(next to CVS) is nice__ Alot of regulars meet every Saturday and Sunday to eat and talk. Some of Detroits more popular faces have been known to show up there.

I've seen members of the City Counsel, The Mayor, Scotty Bowman, Carmen Harlem, Charles Puge, The Police Chief, Tom Barrow, and so on.

The food is your regular Coney Island breakfast stuff, and the service is fast pace!

You can go alone, and sit at the long bar if you like ,and chat with the regular old heads.:-) (Piston talk is very popular along with current events.)

The one place that I really miss for having breakfast was that little coffee shop inside the Park Shelton. The name escapes me but they could sling up some decent pancakes and brew a mean cup of coffee to help wash it down with.

OK, great price, good food, fun atmosphere? Honest(?) Johns is awesome! Did someone on here forget that there is an IHOP on Jefferson? Open on Sunday and a great place for B-fast. I also second Atlas for brunch. "slightly" classier than Honest(?) Johns... hahhahaa. Great brunch for a little more cash.

Place I miss the most? Café de Troit.

Smogboy, I think you're refering to Cappy's which used to be in the Park Shelton. I miss it too. Their omelets were huge and stuffed with your fillings of choice.

Hands down best breakfast and coffee on Sunday:
TWO DOLLAR BREAKFAST at The Steak Hut.

They have 2, 3, and 4 dollar breakfast specials, and a great live bluegrass band almost every week.
It's at

1551 W Lafayette

Original Pancake House in Grosse Pointe (Farms?) is also excellent, similar to the one in Birmingham and closer to much of Detroit. There are still lines on weekends, though. Louie's in Eastern Market is pretty good. Been meaning to try Honest John's for breakfast. And of course the Breakfast House & Grill too, but there are always lines there on weekends too, it seems like.

Question: Anyone know of a Jewish/breakfast/deli place that has good lox & bagels? (open Sunday?) Majestic Cafe has them but they're nothing special there. Samual Hoffman's deli in Troy used to have great lox & bagels, but they closed for awhile and reopened without them. :-( Surely there's someplace around Oak Park...

i agree that Louie's is the bomb! best blueberry pancakes ever. too bad the Eastern Market location is closed sundays; that's closest to me. my second fave is the New Center Eatery on the Boulevard at Woodward; a little pricey, but it's the only place in the city i know of that serves chicken and waffles--yum!

Dougw, only places i know are in the suburbs...Star Deli on Twelve Mile in Southfield or Bread Basket Deli on Greenfield in Oak Park are both awesome. not sure if Star is open sundays but i'm almost positive Bread Basket is.

Bread Basket would be my suggestion as well. They also have a location in Redford across from Wonderland, and also one in Southfield, I think? I know there's multiple locations.

They make a mean hot corned beef.

I concur with the posters who favor the Bread Basket. I go to the Oak Park location. Their corned beef hash and eggs is the best. However, to me, nothing beats their blintzes. The hot, crispy blintz when slathered with cold sour cream is perhaps my favorite desert.

623kraw, I have no idea, I haven't even been by the location since the fire.

I really hope they could reopen there or in a new location, but given the insurance situation (lack thereof) at the time of the fire, it seems doubtful to me

ooh, blintzes...cheese with applesauce for me! like Neilr, i prefer the Oak Park Bread Basket. i've been going to that one since i was a kid, so to me it's the best, although my brother (who would drive hundreds of miles for a good corned beef sandwich) says there is a new location at 8 and Dequindre that is just as good.

MMMM, Cappys! I miss that place. I, too love Janet's Lunch for breakfast. Still has the original "horseshoe" shaped counter.

Harrys on Mack (a few blocks from Alter) in Grosse Pointe Park is another keeper.

Until Detroit Breakfast House gets its wait down to under an hour and a half, I'm taking my Sunday Brunch elsewhere. The food is good, but not *that* good, and it is a little stuffy for me. Their organic sausage is fabulous.

"Elsewhere" last weekend ended up being Atlas - their specials are always really excellent.

The Majestic is great for brunch as well and is always a downtown staple - try the Dirty Eggs. (Feta, artichoke hearts, cloves of garlic...yum!)

For semi-burbland - Toast, The Flytrap, and Bart's, all on Woodward in Ferndale. I've also heard that Como's has just started serving brunch but I have yet to go.
